From: "Atul Chitnis" <achitnis@cbconsulting.com> To: <lwn@eklektix.com> Date: Mon, 31 Aug 1998 23:33:10 +0530 Hi there, Your friendly neighbourhood Indians are at it again. Since you are such nice people, you get to hear this first: PC Quest, India's leading Personal Computing magazine, conducts a survey every year among tens of thousands of readers and industry people to determine "User's Choices" for that year in many categories such as favourite PCs, software, gadgets, etc. The 1998 User Choice Awards are about to hit the stands on September 1st. The stuff will be available on the web at http://www.pcquest.com/sep98 in a few days. This year, there has been a small change in the almost static lineup in the Network Operating Systems category, which was Windows NT followed by Novell Netware. Novell Netware dropped to third place BEHIND LINUX. While Windows NT still leads in the UPI (User Perception Index) ratings, Linux is making a *SERIOUS* dent in that department - with NT's UPI standing at 100 (this is an index - the highest ranked product gets a UPI of 100, and all others are calculated relative to that), Linux has an UPI of 28 and Novell Netware of 23. PC Quest *pleads guilty* to the fact that Linux's meteoric climb has been partially due to the fact that PCQ has been distributing Linux on their cover CD once a year for the past three years (check out http://www.pcquest.com/linux for past articles), but points out that Linux has been hugely successful worldwide this year, and that it is rapidly being adopted in the corporate world. OK, now this is *not* a press release. It will not be official for another 12 hours, though I hold copies of the issue in my hand as I write this - the relevant article is on page 76 of the magazine. I will be hitting the usual places (slashdot, freshmeat, etc.) tomorrow or so, so that should give you time to break the news - first! Maybe you can even save me the trouble and make sure that Rob and scoop know about this from you. Cheerio!
