From: Frodo Looijaard <frodol@dds.nl> Subject: lm_sensors 1.4.2: Hardware monitor module Date: Tue, 15 Sep 1998 14:16:38 GMT -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- This is an announcement of lm_sensors version 1.4.2. Note that new versions are released very often, usually at least once a week. By the time you read this, a new version may already be available at http://www.netroedge.com/~lm78. lm_sensors is a Linux kernel module for 2.0 and 2.1 kernels. It provides access to the hardware monitoring devices which are available on almost all newer (read: less than a year old) mainboards. These sensors report the currently measured voltage levels, temperatures and fan rotation speeds, as well as some other things. The module currently supports the LM78, LM78-J, LM79, LM80 and W83781D chips. These chips can be accessed both through the ISA bus and through the System Management Bus, commonly called SMBus. The only SMBus host supported at this time is the PIIX4 controller. Both the supported range of chips and the possible SMBus hosts will be expanded in the near future. Among those will be the VIA chipsets, and several Analog Devices and Linear Technologies chips. The current measurements can be accessed through the human-readable /proc/sensors file, through the script-parsable files in directory /proc/sys/dev/lm_sensors, and through the C-friendly sysctl interface. Because different mainboards use sensor connections for different purposes, many things can be configured both compile-time and run-time, among them the sensor readings to display and the conversion factors used. In most cases, the defaults work perfectly. The SMBus code can be compiled as a separate module. The exported functions and variables are fully documented, so it is easy to use this module to build your own kernel-drivers for other SMBus devices. The file /proc/smbus has the same functionality as /proc/ioports, except it documents the separate SMBus addressing range. Below you can find the LSM entry. Please contact Philip Edelbrock (phil@netroedge.com) and/or Frodo Looijaard (frodol@dds.nl) if you have questions, suggestions, problems or patches. Or even if you just want to tell us it worked for you! Begin3 Title: lm_sensors Version: 1.4.2 Entered-date: 11SEP98 Description: A Linux kernel module for 2.0 or 2.1 kernels to monitor the hardware health of your system. It supports LM78, LM79, LM80 and W83781D sensor chips, as well as additional LM75 temperature sensors, with more to come soon. A general SMBus module is included, which can be used to build other drivers for SMBus devices.
