I've seen the same thing.  However, I tried compiling with a non-
recommended C compiler (egcs from cvs rather than gcc 2.7.2.x) and
with non-recommended optimizations enabled (-mcpu=pentiumpro 
-march=pentium -fschedule-insns2).  I'm quite willing to chalk this 
up to user error.  I'll try re-compiling sometime within the next
week, still with egcs, but with no special options.  If it's still
slow, I'll use the (buggy, old, not supported) version of gcc they
recommend.

What did you use to compile it?
