Creative's response to a request for SB Live info among other points... ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Thu, 7 Jan 1999 10:36:05 -0800 From: Jacob Hawley <jhawley@creaf.com> To: egalanos@cse.unsw.edu.au Subject: Linux The Linux group is partially right. Creative has no plans of releasing its intellectual property to the general public. We have spent many years and many millions of dollars developing the EMU10K1 audio processor, and we do not intent to release it. This is not much different than asking Intel to publish the internal details of the Pentium II on their website. However, like Intel, AMD or any other chip manufacture we are planning on publishing enough information that interested parties will be able to develop drivers / applications for Linux or any other OS. Initially we plan on working with 4Front Technologies to deliver a Linux driver, this is partly because of their expertise. Additionally, 4Front has proven their ability to deliver and maintain drivers for Unix based OS's so it seems that this is a viable first step for Creative into Linux. Frankly, their is SO much false information in the newsgroups that they have actually SLOWED the release of information to the public. Their was one joker who said he had our internal spec, and that he was going to develop a driver independantly of us. That caused a COMPLETE shutdown of my Linux development for about the last 6 months while we did an internal investigation to find the leak. It turns out that he didn't have anything, and that he was blowing smoke. Creative will deliver a Linux driver and will at some point (6-9 mo.) provide a library that will work with ALAS and enable most of the functionality of the chip. Over time I expect that the full functionality of the chip will be exposed as Linux developers begin to get a feel for our library. Feel free to repost....
