Greetings!

This has been a very busy week in the world of
Midgard, with two new releases and lots of
discussion about future developments of Midgard.

While it was already announced last week, I think
this is still worth reminding. There will be an
IRC conference held on irc.openprojects.net channel
#midgard, and everybody interested in what directions
Midgard will take in the future should participate.
We will also try to help new people interested
in Midgard development to get their work started
on the code. The plan is to start at 15:00 GMT.
Be there!

And now to the headlines:

Midgard 1.1.1 was released

We released Midgard 1.1.1, the second version
of the 'Iron River' series on July 19th.
The release contained bug fixes for the
troublesome 1.1 release as well as a new
improved version of the Admin site.
All users of 1.1 are urged to upgrade.

Go read the release announcement.

ODBC support for Midgard

Shortly after the release of Midgard 1.1
the development team was approached by
Kingsley Idehen from OpenLink Software.

OpenLink has released its iODBC library to
the public under GPL, and they proposed that
Midgard could start supporting it instead
of having to support each database separately.

This seems to be a very likely direction
for Midgard to move, and we have now assigned
the iODBC support to the Roadmap for Midgard
1.2

After this the licensing problems with
MySQL will vanish as users can choose their
database from a longer list of possible
alternatives ranging from big-name databases
like Oracle and Sybase to free databases like
MySQL and Postgres, or even an NNTP server!

RPM packages

Midgard user Emile Heyns has volunteered
to package Midgard for the Red Hat platform.

Packages for Red Hat 5.2 should be available
by next weeks, with packages for RH 6.0
following in August.

Mailing list archives

Thanks to Progressive Computing Concepts, Inc.'s
MARC system, there is now a searchable archive
of the Midgard mailing list available online.

The MARC system also hosts an impressive amount
of other Free Software and Web-related archives,'
and states it plans to function as the "DejaNews
for mailing lists."

Thanks to Hank Leininger for putting the
archives up!
