A gateway that has been implemented under OSGI standards and on the basis of Java technology will enable service providers to link external and internal networks with Internet services and integrate a variety of end-user devices - ranging from consumer to business clients. This means that the Open Service Gateway platform will also be able to provide private households without a personal computer, for example, with access to existing or future Internet services, such as grocery delivery services, emergency medical services or home surveillance. The OSGI specifications will be designed to supplement and/or extend existing standards, such as Bluetooth or JINI, and will define an application framework and resource management concept, APIs for thin and fat WAN clients, device APIs for local area networks, security and integrity APIs, as well as data management APIs for administering database integration. In connection with its involvement in the OSGI, ProSyst will primarily contribute know-how in the field of modern JINI server technology. The members of the OSGI, including such players as Alcatel, Cable & Wireless, Ericsson, IBM, Lucent, Motorola, Nokia, Oracle, Philips, Siemens, Sony and Sun, view distribution of Internet services to personal and business customers as representing a major future market for service providers. In jointly defining the Open Service Gateway, they want to create a standardized software environment early on. The first draft of the OSGI specifications is expected early next year. Further information about the OSGI is available on the Internet at www.osgi.org.
