Subject: [lug] Linux Expo Report, Thursday May 20, 1999

Kevin and Rob are out at Linux Expo. Here's the first report from
Kevin about the goings on. Thanks Kevin.

=================
Linux expo day 1.

Arrived at the networking/Quality Of Service meeting at about 9:15am.
The room was utterly packed. Standing room only (and not much of that).
Estimated 200 or so people.

The talk was interesting, but hard to hear and see the slides. The 2.2
network queueing stuff is very flexable. You can do all sorts of things
to your network packets.

Out of the talk abit before 10, and ran into Geert. Thanked him for
the frambuffer console and talked a bit.

Then about 10am, headed off to the expo hall. Lots of people wandering
around. I wandered thru and went to the email garden and connected my
laptop (why is there tons of netbios traffic? ) There was some brief
problems with the masquerading of the laptop ports, but all the linux
geeks in the area quickly debuged the problem and got it working. ;)

Wandered around the expo hall some more. Had a nice talk with the people
that make the firebox firewall. Got asked if I was looking for a job. ;)
(don't worry sean, I like my current job...) They have an interesting
case and are based on a 2.0.34 kernel (hacked) They are transitioning
to 2.2 now.

Went by and talked to the sangoma people. Their new pci wan card looks
and sounded pretty cool. Ran into Stephen Tweedee there (he was trying
to talk to them about the sangoma in 2.2 support).

At about 11:40 went over to the hall where the keynote is going to be.
Everyone lined up to get in. Saw Ted Tso at the front of the line talking
about capabilities, but he was too far away to join in.

Finally got in about noon. Waited for keynote. Keynote was ok, but pretty
predictable. Maddog introduced Bob young of RedHat. A few amusing stores,
but nothing too surprising. The gigantic hall was about half full.

About 1pm we went and had some lunch in a little caffe. Then we headed
back to the expo hall.

Wandered around and visited with tons of people. Had a nice talk with
larry mcvoy about bitkeeper. Got free beer from the firebox people.
Got lots of loot from various places. (ready to raffle off at a lug
meeting. ;)

About 4 we headed back to the hotel to relax for a bit.

After an all too brief rest, we headed out to the IBM sponsored
dinner/music event. Filled up on Amber Bock and party foods, we wandered
around and soaked in the sights. Said Hello to Tesla Cox.

We realized that it was almost 7pm by then, and that we wanted to go
to a BOF session at 6:30. Quickly we hurried off to the room where the
XFree864.0 BOF was already in progress. Lots of good info about video
cards and support.

At 7:30, we wandered off to two other BOF's...I went to the bitkeeper
one and Rob went to the Games one.

Bitkeeper sounds very interesting. It addresses a lot of the problems
that CVS does not. Expect to see it used for kernel development if
Larry can get it solid enough for linus. Check out it's web site at
http://www.bitkeeper.com/

By then it was about 9pm. Time for a quick beer with a few of the folks
from the BoF's and then time for sleep.
