The donation will aid the legal defense that the EFF is mounting in response to lawsuits by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) and the DVD Copy Control Association (DVD CCA). The lawsuits, directed at open source developers and web sites around the world, aim to suppress the source code that would allow DVD movies to be played on the Linux operating system. The majority of the donation is a result of the popularity of Copyleft's newest T-shirt, which Copyleft produced specifically to help support the EFF. Copyleft pledged to donate $4 from each shirt, and to date over 2000 of these shirts have been ordered. These T-shirts were worn outside the Santa Clara courthouse during the preliminary court hearings, and subsequently submitted by the DVD CCA plaintiff attorney as evidence. A second style of T-shirt, "Got DeCSS?", is now available on the Copyleft web site. Featuring more of the DeCSS source code in a parody of the "Got Milk" advertising campaign, each shirt sold will also contribute $4 to the EFF. Copyleft.net is an open source retailer that produces a unique line of T-shirts, polo shirts, ties, and hats that have been invading geek hampers since the company's inception in 1998. Working with and supporting various community projects, including the Free Software Foundation and Linux International, Copyleft has donated more than $85,000 to the open source community. More details on Copyleft's giving and products can be found at http://www.copyleft.net. The Electronic Frontier Foundation is a non-profit, non-partisan organization working in the public interest to protect fundamental civil liberties, including privacy and freedom of expression, in the arena of computers and the Internet. The EFF was founded in 1990, and is based in San Francisco, California, with offices in Washington, DC, and New York City.
