For the past year the OpenNMS team has been building the next generation enterprise management platform. Why? Because the enterprise management marketplace is controlled by large hardware vendors that promote decade old solutions to their technology starved customers. The only way to modernize the marketplace dominated by industry goliaths is to change the rules. It's time to put the power back into the hands of the community! The Bluebird project is a ground up solution to modern enterprise management problems. Using modern technologies like JAVA, XML, ODBC, and distributed computing, OpenNMS is building a fully distributed open management architecture. Bluebird is designed to be a distributed system where discovery, capability polling, and availability data is collected autonomously from distributed locations. Distributed polling provides a fault tolerant system where disconnected pollers can still collect local data and later collate information with one or more master stations when the network recovers. The master station consolidates data from the various distributed pollers and provides availability reporting using business views. The graphical interfaces for both users and administrators are written in pure Java 2 for maximum portability.
