From: mattdm@mattdm.org Subject: Announcing Boston University Linux To: lwn@lwn.net Date: Tue, 9 May 2000 15:56:47 -0400 (EDT) The Office of Information Technology is pleased to announce the first release of Boston University Linux. Linux is a free Unix-like operating system developed by programmers all over the world. It can be an excellent choice for either workstations or servers, offering high-end performance on commodity hardware. The BU Linux distribution is the best way to bring this power to any Intel-platform PC connected to the Boston University network. BU Linux is based on the popular Red Hat Linux distribution, tailored to match the Boston University computing environment and enhanced for better security and added functionality. Since the install program already knows about our network, installations take much less effort. We've also preconfigured many services, including the autorpm system (which provides timely and automatic updates), Kerberos IV (which allows users to log in with their university-wide passwords), and OpenSSH (for secure connections between machines). Currently, BU Linux is only available to those connected to the campus network. The installation process is network-based, and many of the features that make BU Linux unique are only useful for network-connected machines. More information can be found on the BU Linux web site at <http://linux.bu.edu/>, or by sending e-mail to <linux-help@it.bu.edu>. -- Matthew Miller ---> mattdm@mattdm.org Quotes 'R' Us ---> http://quotes-r-us.org/ Boston University Linux ---> http://linux.bu.edu/
