JSNMP Testing Nears Completion: Just like it says, our home grown Java SNMP libraries are slowly nearing production grade. Later this week, they will be bundled and available for download from the web site as well as via CVS. As a practice, we will not release components outside of CVS, but as this is a significant piece of work which can benefit a number of projects outside our own, we'll make an exception. Watch for the announcement on Freshmeat.net. +ACI-Services+ACI- Discovery Defined: With a cloud of dust and a hearty +ACI-Hi-ho, Silver+ACI-, a flurry of email postings to the 'general' list helped us through some core design issues and led us to a statement of our informal stance on what constitutes existence of a service, for discovery reasons. In short, we decided that anything listening on the appropriate (yet configurable) port, and responding with the right banner/thumbprint, we consider it a discovered service. Per our discussion, this applies to a 220 response to FTP/SMTP, an +ACI-HTTP+ACI- response for HTTP, and some lower-level work to be done for our UDP counterparts in DNS and SNMP. For those of you that missed the discussion, let's sum it up by saying that several incredibly intelligent bit-twiddling propeller heads who know way too much about protocols have slight differences of opinion as to what constitues a service being +ACI-up+ACI-. So we all agreed to disagree and build configurable components. And then we all hugged and sang +ACI-Kum-bay-ah+ACI-. I can still taste those +ACI-s'mores+ACI-... Slight Changes to CVS: +ACI-Again? That trick'll never work+ACEAIg- - Rocky Just a note for your configuration reference. The hostname of the machine hosting our CVS tree has been changed to +ACI-cvs.opennms.org+ACI- from +ACI-www.opennms.org+ACI- Now before you get your undies in a bundle trying to figure out why you didn't notice the change, here's the secret -- they are the same machine. So why the name change? Just a simple preparation for eventually splitting the CVS instance off of the web server. No big whoop. +AD0APQA9AD0APQA9AD0APQA9AD0APQA9AD0APQA9AD0APQA9AD0APQA9AD0APQA9AD0APQA9- Turn on, Pitch in, Help Out +AD0APQA9AD0APQA9AD0APQA9AD0APQA9AD0APQA9AD0APQA9AD0APQA9AD0APQA9AD0APQA9- First off, a hearty +ACI-Thanks+ACI- to everyone that rose to the call last week on the documentation front. Currently, my main man Chris in Dayton, OH (+ACI-Dayton? No, we barely know each other.+ACI-) is dusting off his VBA skills and turning out a script that will convert our M+ACQ- Word docs to DocBook format. Assuming that this goes as planned (I've got faith in ya, man+ACE-), we should soon be able to announce a closure to that aspect of the documentation. Woo-hoo+ACE- But alas, that just means that the conversion piece is out of the way and we can get on to generating some REAL doc+ACE- The first pieces we're ready to take a swing at include: - The JSNMP libraries - ICMPD (Cross-platform) - The EUIs (Admin and Operator Panels) If you're handy with the language (or willing to translate to anything non-English), let us know. We'll get you set-up so you can figure out the innards and can get access to the authors if need be. For those of you that aren't scared to RTFM, maybe it's time for you to take a crack at WTFM (W +AD0- Writing). +AD0APQA9AD0APQA9AD0APQA9AD0APQA9AD0APQA9AD0- Road Show Update +AD0APQA9AD0APQA9AD0APQA9AD0APQA9AD0APQA9AD0- It seems like the more talks we do, the more we schedule. That either means that we put on a good show, or that groups are hard-up for speakers. I'm guessing that Steve falls into the former category, while I prove out the latter.
