Web: http://light.cern.ch Email: light@cern.ch LIGHT is a system that is under development at CERN. The goals is to: - represent information as "LIGHT objects" available via the network, replacing the concept of "web pages" to represent information; - provide a software framework with servers to store, manage and distribute these LIGHT objects; - provide an architecture so that LIGHT objects can be produced and retrieved automatically from any standard Java-enabled browser; - provide an implementation of these concepts with a general open source framework. LIGHT: - is general to any type of information and organization; - automatically identifies information and understand the structure and connectivity of that information; - is scalable and distributed on the network; - is configurable to: - receive information in any format; - display the information to any Java-enabled browser. ---- We believe in open source initiatives and CERN decided to publish the framework of the LIGHT system under the GNU GPL license. This means that any modification to source code of the framework must be shared with the rest of the community. LIGHT plug-ins can be either open source or proprietary depending on the choice of the developer. CERN-developed ] plug-ins are going to be open source as well.
