It is now available for download from SuSE's ftp server (ftp://ftp.suse.com). SuSE's preliminary version includes the Linux operating system and more than 400 popular software applications such as Apache, Samba, Sendmail, Bind, various development tools and other applications. The release of the production version is scheduled for this fall. SuSE will be working with the IBM Lab in Böblingen, Germany during the S/390 Install Fest, scheduled for July 15th to 30th. "With more than 100 worldwide participants signed up, our engineers, along with IBM engineers, will walk clients through their first installation", said Marcus Kraft, head of the SuSE Linux S/390 project. Mission-critical applications for enterprise systems that require the traditional strength of the S/390 platform - unmatched in reliability, security, scalability and availability - will now operate on SuSE Linux S/390, complemented by new Linux applications. "SuSE has provided excellent Linux support for the S/390," comments Nancy Roath, VP, S/390 brand marketing, IBM. "The team at SuSE has continued to impress our engineers at IBM and we look forward to continuing our relationship with them." Running SuSE Linux on the S/390 architecture results in significant cost savings for businesses running server farms. The S/390 also allows configuring logical partitions on a single machine and the use of VM/ESA. The ease of quickly adding new Linux guests to a VM/ESA system is very useful for replicating servers. Internet businesses needing additional servers to process requests, such as web shops, can add web servers in minutes by using the outstanding capabilities of the S/390 platform. In addition, the S/390 allows its traditional operating systems (OS/390, VM/ESA, VSE/ESA) to run independently of each other. This partitioning gives enterprises the possibility to deploy SuSE Linux while maintaining their current OS environment.Customers can use standard Internet applications, such as Apache or Sendmail, without giving up their traditional host OS/390. Besides the Intel platform, SuSE Linux also runs on PowerPC and Alpha processors. SuSE's availability on the S/390 facilitates and unifies platform interoperability and system administration tasks in the heterogeneous network. At the same time, it minimizes the expenditure for development or acquisition of new products. "Running Linux on IBM products, from ThinkPad to S/390, offers enterprise solutions to a new breed of IT professionals. The stability of Linux, combined with the strength and trustworthiness of IBM makes for an unbeatable combination" explained Dirk Hohndel, CTO of SuSE Linux AG in Germany. "With SuSE Linux for the S/390 we establish SuSE as a major league player in the enterprise server environment." "We are extremely pleased to have IBM, the world's largest computer company, offer SuSE Linux to its customers," added Volker Wiegand, President of SuSE Inc., in Oakland, California. "We look forward to showing SuSE Linux working on a wide range of IBM's hardware in a heterogeneous e-business environment at LinuxWorld this fall."
