Date: Tue, 17 Oct 2000 15:40:01 -0500 (CDT) Subject: [opennms-announce] OpenNMS Update v1.30 ================ OpenNMS Update ================ Vol 1., Issue 30 ================ In this week's installment... * Project Status + Timelines Being Re-addressed + CVS Tree "Cleaned" + Coding Projects Underway * Highlights from ALS * The Wish List ============== Project Status ============== Timelines Being Re-addressed As we've said from day one, we're targeting a .9 release, (full functionality, sans field testing) by the end of this calendar year (4Q00). We're holding to that, but some additional things have cropped up that might impact the project somewhat. Relax. These are good things. While in Atlanta last week, we were approached by a major Linux distribution regarding including a development release on their next major release. Due to their timeframes, and the necessary lead times involved with getting a CD pressed, our deadline has likely moved forward to the Thanksgiving timeframe. Keep in mind that we were on track for a release a month later than this with all of the functionality advertised, so this release will likely focus on finishing up a subset of this functionality and shipping something usable, instead of a development version that means nothing to anyone but Java developers. More details on this next week as the plan shakes out, but keep in mind this interim drop when considering your needs and expectations of the .9 release. Thanks! CVS Tree "Cleaned Up": OK. So here I am, sitting in a big empty tradeshow exhibit floor at all hours of the night last Wednesday trying to build from our external CVS tree. Let's just say that it didn't work, and let's also say that it does now. We had some mental lapses on making sure that all of our "contrib" code (including libraries from other projects) got into the public CVS tree, but all of these issues are, as of now, resolved. Ben has also gone the extra step and ANTed the whole thing, so now with the execution of a single script and a hearty "Hi-ho, Silver", you too can build from our external CVS tree, all from the comfort of your home. NOW how much would you pay? But wait, there's MORE! Actually, there's not really anything other more than a disclaimer that if you build from the public CVS tree, you are truly getting a development version. It will build, but it won't do much. That will be changing soon (see bullet above), so please be patient. Coding Projects Underway: * create.sql -- No signficant changes. * Events -- Weave has actually built some code for SOAP that we need internally and in turn, has submitted this code back to the SOAP team at xml.apache.org. * SCM -- Ancitipating release to the public CVS tree by mid-next week. * icmpd/Perl -- No update. * Filters -- Jason's included a tool he built for testing the rules, that now is available from the graphical builder tool. Nice work, J! Rock on! * Java MIB Compiler/ASN.1-to-XML Converter/Event Configuration Tool -- This has all been back-burnered for the moment, but will be back at the fore once we're through with this timeline reorg. * jSNMP -- Counter64 support built but not tested. * AWT-to-Swing Conversion -- Underway =================== Highlights from ALS =================== As you might anticipate, we're all kind of pumped about the possibility of being included in a major Linux distribution, even if it does mess with our timelines. Obviously, this is the big news for us from the show. We also had a chance to spend some time with some of the folks from our new parent company, Atipa. A good bunch of folks that technically know their stuff, including hardware/Linux/clustering. If you didn't get a chance to see them there, check out the website at (you guessed it) http://www.atipa.com Also, there appears to be plenty of opportunity to get the word out on OpenNMS in the Linux trade press. If you'd like to write an article (or help us write one), let me know. ============= The Wish List ============= The list remains much the same, but next week, should get changed up a little bit, reflecting some of the new priorities in getting out an early release. Anyway, your help is, as always, both requested and appreciated in regards to the following topics: * Test Counter64 support in jSNMP * Add SNMPv3 functionality to jSNMP * Implement the event correlation spec. * Review the database design * Consider the integration points for CIM/WBEM support * Take a look at the ASN.1-to-XML conversion utilities that are available and let us know what you think... JavaCup parser for MIBs or ASN.1 to XML conversion. My only wish in the world right now is that someone else had been there to watch Luke "Flip-flops" Rindfuss helping out to set up the booth. I put him in charge of AC power, seemingly harmless enough, when I had the distinct pleasure to watch his mind explode while he tried to troubleshoot the following situation: * No power to computer * Computer plugged into Power Strip A * Power Strip A plugged into Power Strip B * Power Strip B plugged into Power Strip B My recommendation: hire sales folks for tech jobs; they're fun to watch. _______________________________________________ announce mailing list (announce@opennms.org) To subscribe, unsubscribe, or change your list options, go to: http://www.opennms.org/mailman/listinfo/announce
