On Thursday, 19 October 2000, bidding will start in the Internet at http://ID-PRO.com/auction. The server is shaped like a prism and is solely based on Open-Source-Software, which is why the proceeds will benefit the Open-Source Community. PAUL has been signed by Linus Torvalds, the »creator« of the Linux-Kernel, Richard Stallman, founder of the GNU Project and the Free Software Foundation, Alan Cox, one of the most important kernel developers and John »Maddog« Hall, Director of LINUX International, among others. »The proceeds of this auction will benefit two projects, on behalf of the whole community:«, explains Daniel Riek, ID-PRO's chairman, »Part will made available on the foundation of the Free Software Foundation Europe. As the administration software we developed for PAUL is subject to the GNU General Public License and PAUL is solely based on free software, we would like to support the dissemination of free software in Europe actively.« Another objective is to further the dissemination of LINUX on the desktop. »That's why we have decided that the KDE team will receive another part of the proceeds,« says Riek. In order to bid, all interested parties must first register at the website. Bids can only be made with a username and password provided by ID-PRO. Potential bidders will receive their passwords by mail or fax following their registration. »We wish to ensure that all the submitted bids are serious«, explains Riek the procedure. »Our objective is to receive the highest possible amount for the support of the two projects. We hope that all interested bidders will support us.« The auction is to reach its climax at ID-PRO's stand at the Systems (hall A3, stand 201 -E 6). On November10, the last but one day of the exhibition, at 2 p.m., the new owner of the VIP-PAUL will be announced officially.
