BSDi Ships Metro-X and Micro-X with the eBSD Embedded Operating System - targeting emerging Internet Appliance market Ft. Lauderdale, FL Jan 23, 2001 - Metro Link announced today that every eBSD operating system sold will include Metro-X for host development and a demo of Micro-X, scalable embedded X server. Developers will be able to use Micro-X's small footprint demo to simulate the X server running on their set-top box, web pad, residential gateway, or other next generation Internet appliance target design. These consumer electronic and component markets are expected to soar with sales rising sharply from $100 million in 2000 to $5 billion in 2005, according to a Cahners In-Stat Group forecast. Based on the embedded developer's application requirements, Micro-X is custom configured to the smallest size possible - as small as 570kb. This results in the smallest possible memory footprint for the application, ready for deployment to the developer's target system. And because its standards-based, developers will be able to achieve a lower cost of deployment and quicker time-to-market. Micro-X brings the versatility, flexibility and standards of the X Window System to embedded applications. Host and target systems can utilize the same X Window System platform, which is a huge benefit to application developers. Developers will be able to display embedded 2D/3D graphics, video-in-a-window and MPEG playback with Micro-X on their Internet appliance, consumer electronic device, set-top box or multimedia device running eBSD on multiple architectures. "Metro Link's Metro-X and Micro-X are the prefect fit for eBSD. Developers will be able to use our X server to design the latest products on the market such as web pads and intelligent networked devices," said Morgan Von Essen, Metro Link President and CEO. "We look forward to supporting eBSD customers with the smallest standards-based graphics solution possible for their embedded applications." "Metro Link's innovation and proven track record in X Windows software for the embedded market gives our customers the confidence of knowing their embedded device is ready for prime time," said John Smithmyer, Vice President of Embedded Sales for BSDi. "Including Metro Link's X server in our eBSD package will ensure our embedded developers the best X server on the market for all next generation internet appliance development."
