Project Status
==============

Easy Installer Gets Flexible:

     Hold the pickles, hold the lettuce, special orders don't upset us,
     all we ask is that you let us serve it your way. -- Burger King Jingle

     As requested by a number of you, both the latest stable and
     unstable releases are now available for web-based installation via
     the "Easy Installer".

     To try this one out, just hit one of the following URLs (as deemed
     appropriate by your sense of danger and respect for your system
     and/or network):

     * Stable: lynx --source install.opennms.org/stable | sh

     * Unstable: lynx --source install.opennms.org/unstable | sh

     Kudos to Ben for knocking this out post-haste, as well as for the
     numerous bug-fixes to the installation stuff this week as well.
     Additional recognition goes out to the following folks that
     identified some of the...ahem...improvement targets that Ben was
     working on of late:

     Big thanks to all of you who are sticking with us and sharing in
     some of the pain. We know you have other things you could be doing,
     so continue on knowing that your efforts are appreciated.


The Sowmya Returns:

     My month from hell is over! I can now rest easy again, with Sowmya
     back in the States.

     And judging from appearances, she seems better off than when she
     left, since she was walking around like a whiplash victim the day
     her flight was to take off. After seeing several specialists in
     India (and being offered a home remedy at every family member's
     home she visited), something cured her. And sick or not, we're glad
     to have her back.

     With Sowmya back and healthy, the jury is still out on who will be
     the first to fall prey to a Darwinian thinning of our ranks.
     However, the smart money is on Jason "Geronimo" Johns.

     Jason is the guy that built a loft in his bedroom so he has
     additional floorspace, but is now constantly waking up thinking
     that the ceiling is falling in on him, and while bracing against
     the "weight" of the ceiling, manages to stick an arm or leg through
     the drywall.

     If that's not testimony enough to him falling into Darwin's "slow
     and weak" category, calculate in that last time this happen, he
     managed to not only create more holes in his ceiling, but while
     extracting himself from said holes, he manages to FALL OUT of the
     loft altogether. The medical reports are still not unanimous, but
     there is a strong chance that there is some kind of fracture of the
     elbow or forearm.

     So if any of you happen to have a pole vault pit that you are
     trying to get rid of, I believe you may want to talk with our group
     insurance carrier who is looking at containing their risk...


Coding Projects Underway:

     * CDP/L2/Mapping -- Pete is alive and kicking and actively looking
       for someone in the Boulder, CO area to do some part-time work on
       this, perhaps even for pay. If you are a Java/Linux/Network-type
       in that area and are looking for a part-time gig for the next year
       or so, drop me a line and I'll get you in touch with Pete.

     * Snort Integration -- Matthew is out, and the offer that is on the
       table to pick up his efforts kicks in in a couple weeks. If you
       are interested, let me know. Thanks.

     * Solaris Port -- We're starting to look for Sparc hardware that we
       can build/test on. Anybody willing to take this one on?

     * NT/2K Port -- The new ICMPD is in the process of being merged into
       CVS, and we've not compiled it for the Win32 world yet (nor do we
       have the tools to do so). Anybody out there care to help with
       this?

     * SNMP Poller/Data Collection -- Anybody out there got good data
       collections defined for other tools (MRTG/Cricket/etc) they'd like
       to contribute?

     * Logging (Conversion to Log4J) -- Everything is complete but the
       service monitors...

     * User Interfaces -- Many bug fixes. Enough that we'll likely see a
       0.7.5-3 sooner than later.

     * Configuration -- Any feedback on the event configurator?

     * New Pollers/Plug-Ins -- SMB is in, DHCP is on the way.

     * Agent Technologies -- Craig has finished co-locating (is that
       anything like co-habitating?) and will resume development this
       week. Woo-hoo!

     * Development Environment -- Note above blurb about the stable and
       unstable web installers. Also note strong likelihood that 0.7.5-3
       will be available soon.

     * Bug Fixing, RTC-Style -- We are digging in to RTC to validate that
       the right data is getting to the right place at the right time. If
       you see any circumstances where the total number of Outages and
       the Category information doesn't jibe, please let us know. If this
       doesn't make sense, drop me an email.

The Wish List
=============

   And now, on with the list...

     * We need someone to "autoconf" the ICMPD build.

     * Stefan Wasilewski has bellied up to the DEB-building bar. I'm sure
       he'd appreciate your help.

     * Our new ICMPD needs to be compiled for Win32. Got an appropriate
       environment that you can help?

     * In the 0.7.5 release (and CVS), checkout the TODO file

     * Any progress reports on testing notifications?

     * New Data Collection configs wanted for the DataCollection.xml

     * Build some event configurations. Please.

     * Any interest in more TCP pollers? Let us know (or better yet,
       build one yourself...)

     * I'm still intrigued by the thought of an nmap poller.

     * Documentation and development your game? How about a white paper
       on how to extend OpenNMS with custom pollers, custom configs,
       and/or your own scripts/code.

     * Any additional help we can get proving our documentation either
       right or wrong is appreciated. Thanks.

     * Got any creative applications for OpenNMS that we haven't
       considered? Let us know!

     * A Security analysis of OpenNMS?

     * Got an environment that could stress test OpenNMS, from a
       scalability perspective? We'd love the feedback!

Afterthoughts
=============

   Plenty of help from the world at large this week. Aside from our
   build/install bug-finders, we've also heard from Stefan Wasilewski who
   will be taking on the task of building DEBs (all hail, Stefan!), from
   Craig Trader (bug finder and RedHat 7.1 enabler (BTW - Consensus is
   that the process limit has to do with the VA kernel, but we've got no
   proof...)), and Bob "rpms4java" Tanner, who has generously offered to
   off-load some of the RPM maintenance tasks from Ben. While I'm not yet
   sure how much we can (or should) safely off-load, it's a definite that
   we'll be able to leverage a good part of Bob's work.

   If you haven't seen Bob's stuff before, take a look at his project at
   Freshmeat. This is a service that's been a long, painful time coming.
   It seems that a good number of the available RPMs for this kind of
   stuff have been by folks who have taught themselves to build RPMs to
   support their heinous crack habit. A little quality infusion in this
   area will be a refreshing change...

   Looking forward to seeing a number of you this coming weekend. And for
   those of you that have never been, give some serious thought to
   attending the GNU/Linux BBQ on Friday night. Who knows what you'll
   see? Maybe a resident guru from amongst the local ranks. Maybe some
   fire-eating. And best of all, maybe Luke's "Women in Comfortable
   Shoes" flip-flops.
