               University of Twente, Enschede, The Netherlands

      A conference organized by the GUUG (the German UNIX User Group),
     with support of the NLUUG (the UNIX User Group - the Netherlands)
          and LiVe (Linux Verband, Germany), under the auspices of
            the German ministry of education and reseach (BMBF)

OVERVIEW

The 8th International Linux-Kongress 2001 will take place from November
28 to November 30, 2001, on the campus of the University of Twente (UT),
Enschede, the Netherlands. It follows the tradition of the Linux-Kongress
series in Germany (Heidelberg '94, Berlin '95 and '96, Wuerzburg '97,
Koeln '98, Augsburg '99, and Erlangen '00) which has evolved into the
most important meeting for Linux experts and developers in Europe.
This year is special because we celebrate the 10th anniversary of Linux
and are organizing the conference for the first time outside Germany.

You are invited to participate in this famous Linux community event by
giving a presentation about your current development work, experiences
with Linux and Open Source, and future plans. The Linux-Kongress will
be the best opportunity for Open Source developers to meet in Europe
and exchange ideas about current and upcoming Open Source projects.

You can learn from the tutorials, refereed papers, and invited talks, and
discuss the newest technology with famous Linux and Open Source gurus.
You can also visit the vendor exhibition, where leading Linux and Open
Source companies show their newest products, or find the latest books
about your favorite topic on this exhibition. A social event will be
organized on Thursday, November 29. A perfect opportunity to exchange
ideas with other Linux experts, while enjoying food and drinks.

The official language at the conference will be English.

TUTORIAL PROGRAM (November 28)

On Wednesday, a number of tutorials will be presented, all related
to Linux and Open Source. Tutorials both for beginners and for more
advanced users and developers will be included. If you're interested
in presenting a tutorial or would like to share ideas about what would
be a terrific tutorial, please contact the program committee via e-mail
at <program@linux-kongress.org>.

TECHNICAL CONFERENCE (November 29-30)

Thursday and Friday will offer around 25 technical sessions, including
keynote address, presentations of refereed papers, and invited talks,
divided in 2 parallel tracks. The talks will focus on Linux kernel and
systems software, as well as more generic Open Source software, the
underlying software technologies, and the free software and Open Source
philosophy. Each presentation will be 40 minutes (including discussions,
when applicable).

The Linux-Kongress 2001 conference seeks original and innovative papers
about the current Linux software development and more generally about
Open Source projects.

Presentations are being solicited in areas including, but not limited to:

   * 10 years of Linux (historical perspective)
   * Security (firewalls, VPNs, cryptography)
   * Networking (IPv6)
   * High-Availability and clustering
   * Architectures (from Linux on PDA's to Linux on S/390)
   * Virtual machines and emulations (Wine, Plex86, User-Mode Linux)
   * Storage management (LVM, filesystems)
   * Device drivers
   * Multimedia
   * ...

To address the fast evolving nature of Linux, new topics not covered
by the conference talks can be discussed during informal gatherings,
called Birds-of-a-Feather (BoF) sessions. BoFs may be scheduled at the
conference or in advance by mailing the program committee.

REFEREED PAPER SUBMISSIONS

Papers for the technical sessions will be reviewed by the program
committee. An extended abstract is required for the paper selection
process. These abstracts must be submitted via the Linux-Kongress 2001
web site at <http://www.linux-kongress.org/abstract-submission.html>.
Only abstracts in ASCII or HTML format (250-500 words), including a title
and the name(s) and e-mail address(es) of the author(s) are accepted.
Furthermore, abstracts accompanied by non-disclosure agreement forms are
not acceptable and will be returned unread. By submitting an abstract
to the Linux-Kongress 2001 organization, you also give permission to
publish it on the conference web site.

Authors of accepted submissions are asked to provide a final paper for
publication in the conference proceedings. This paper preferably should
not have been published before.
