---------------------------------------------------------------------
Red Hat, Inc. Red Hat Bug Fix Advisory

Synopsis: New SysVinit package to fix hangs on serial console
Advisory ID: RHBA-2001:085-02
Issue date: 2001-06-21
Updated on: 2001-06-22
Product: Red Hat Linux
Keywords: SysVinit serial console kernel 2.4.3
Cross references:
Obsoletes:
---------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Topic:

New SysVinit packages are available for Red Hat Linux 7.1; these packages
fix a problem where various things would fail on a serial console (such
as single user mode) when used with the Linux kernel version 2.4.3 or higher.

It is recommended that all users update to the fixed packages, especially
those that use a serial console.

2. Relevant releases/architectures:

Red Hat Linux 7.1 - alpha, i386

3. Problem description:

init did not properly set the CREAD flag; with the 2.4.3 (and later) kernels,
this could cause applications to be unable to receive input from a serial
console.

Thanks go to vhou@khmer.cc for providing the patch.

4. Solution:

Before applying this update, make sure all previously released errata
relevant to your system have been applied.

To update all RPMs for your particular architecture, run:

rpm -Fvh [filenames]

where [filenames] is a list of the RPMs you wish to upgrade. Only those
RPMs which are currently installed will be updated. Those RPMs which are
not installed but included in the list will not be updated. Note that you
can also use wildcards (*.rpm) if your current directory *only* contains the
desired RPMs.

Please note that this update is also available via Red Hat Network. Many
people find this an easier way to apply updates. To use Red Hat Network,
launch the Red Hat Update Agent with the following command:

up2date

This will start an interactive process that will result in the appropriate
RPMs being upgraded on your system.

5. Bug IDs fixed (http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla for more info):

40934 - sulogin exits immediatelywhen called in rc.sysinit
42280 - Serial console and single user mode don't cooperate
45284 - Serial console does not work properly during init

You can verify each package with the following command:
    rpm --checksig <filename>

tampered with, examine only the md5sum with the following command:
    rpm --checksig --nogpg <filename>
