From: Joseph Cheek <joseph@cheek.com> To: rl-announce@chicago.redmondlinux.org Subject: [rl-announce] build 35 Date: Mon, 2 Jul 2001 22:11:14 -0700 (PDT) hello all, thanks for the wait. build 35 is here, and i trust you will not be disappointed. this build brings us ever-so-close to the next milestone, code complete, and hosts a bevy of new and updated features: * added rlwv MS Word documents can be previewed in text format quickly by right-clicking on them from the file manager and choosing "Open With > Word Quick Viewer" * updated linux kernel to 2.4.5-ac13 * updated mozilla -> 0.9.1 * updated XFree86 to 4.1.0 * updated Glide libraries the linux kernel, mozilla web browser, the XFree86 display server, and 3D Glide libraries have all been updated to current versions. * fixed rtl8139 detection network cards based on the RTL8139 chipset should be now detected on install. * added mga powerdesk Matrox has released a utility to create video device settings for users of their cards. this utility is included. * added inn and webalizer * added ftp daemon, bind, majordomo these utilities are added for those who wish to use Redmond Linux as as server. * updated update tool, added gui redmond linux update wizard the console-based update program "rlupdate" has been improved, and a graphical version has been added. these tools will allow you to update between new builds without having to download a new cd and install it. look for the graphical tool in "System Management > Update Wizard". * updated kde the KDE desktop has been updated, increasing the stability of konqueror and also adding support for "Personal FIles". All KDE-aware applications will now use the "Personal Files" folder as the default place to load and save documents. * updated rlizard installer A significant update, the RLizard install utility has been updated. this update solves some of the installation problems [such as the Test Video Mode button not working] and adds another update method, from within RLizard. The Lizard installer itself will scan for and install applicable updates to your Redmond Linux system; it will also let you update from earlier Caldera products, all the way back to OpenLinux 2.2 [this has not been tested]. this is generally the safest way to do major system updates. * Device hotplugging now works with USB, PCMCIA, and hot-pluggable PCI, module drivers load and unload automatically when the device is inserted or removed. For example, the USB HID drivers load as soon as a USB keyboard is added; the Logitech Quickcam drivers load as soon as a USB Quickcam is plugged in. there are a few caveats with this build, but in general it's stable and looking good. it's something i am pleased with. this release, as i stated at the beginning of this e-mail, brings us almost code complete. the next build, build 36, will be code complete which means that all of the functionality to be included within Redmond Linux will be present. here's a quick summary of the remaining milestones: build 36, mid july code complete milestone, beta 3 refresh all redmond linux functionality will be included rlizard frozen, misc apps frozen work begins on freezing UI build 37, early august UI freeze all desktop components will be given their final look and feel. this includes menu placement, naming, and so on. kernel frozen, third party apps frozen work begins on fixing final ["showstopper"] bugs build 38, late august Release Candidate 0 KDE, KOffice, Mozilla, and all rest of RL frozen All bugs worth fixing will be fixed. This build will be tested for any remaining showstopper bugs. If none are found, it will be declared the final version of Redmond Linux Personal, Amethyst Edition. if other showstopper bugs are found, new release candidates will be created each week. thanks! joe - -- rl-announce list.
