HELP LPI RELEASE LEVEL 2 EXAMS!

We will be offering both level 2 exams (LPI-201 and 202) as one
extended exam for a reduced price ($84 US) during the month of
 September 2001.
 This exam will be available at your local Vue test centre;
 http://www.vue.com/lpi

Candidates who pass the extended exam will be entitled to LPIC-2
and will receive the 2nd Level certificate, once they have completed
 their Level 1 certification.
Once Level 2 exams are out of beta (by November, 2001) there will
again
be 2 exams, with individual pricing.

Also, we will be offering proctored testing sites around the world
where there are 20 or more qualified** individuals who are interested
in
taking the beta exams using low cost "paper" tests. If you are a
member
of a group interested in hosting a proctored exam site during the month
of September, please get in touch with LPI immediately. We have a
limited number of LPI staff who are willing to assist in various areas
 around the world.

 Test Results:

Beta test results will be available in November via a secure website
interface, so there will not be a lengthy waiting period for exam
 results.

Interested in taking advantage of this opportunity? Start studying now!
Objectives can be found at: http://www.lpi.org/p-L2-obj-pre.html
Please contact LPI if you have any questions or concerns; info@lpi.org

(* A qualified Level 2 beta test candidate is one who:
 - Is a professional Linux Systems Administrator
 - Has about 3-4 years of UNIX/Linux sysadmin experience
 - Has successfully passed both of the LPIC-1 tests (optional to take
the
 - test, but mandatory to recieve certification as LPIC-2))

 2. New LPI President and New Board Member.

We are pleased to announce the appointment of our new president, Chuck
Mead and our new board member, Jim Lacey.
 http://linuxtoday.com/news_story.php3?ltsn=2001-07-25-012-20-PR

Dan York, our first president - has decided to step down but will
continue to participate in helping to run LPI, thanks Dan for all your
 hard work.

Good-luck Chuck and Jim with your new roles within LPI.

 3. LPI Volunteer of the Month: Torsten Scheck

Special thanks are extended to Torsten Scheck of Elztal, Germany for
his outstanding contributions to LPI. One of the first LPIC-1 Alumni,
Torsten has been a contributor to the Alumni program, working in
 several
European LPI booths during trade shows, and working to create a more
flexible and dynamic logo. The success of the LPI program has been
completely dependent upon the outstanding contribution of our
volunteers, and we are pleased to recognize Torsten for his
dedication.

Torsten posted some comments regarding his experience as a volunteer in
 Stuttgart:
" LPI was at the LinuxTag 2001 in Stuttgart, Germany from the 5th
to the 8th of July with assistance of the German Linux
 association "Linux Verband - LIVE"
During these 4 days I spoke with approximately 100 people who
 visited the LPI booth.
About 10 real Linux newbies asked about Linux training. I
adviced them to start using Linux first, suggested to buy a
good book, and to look at the LPI exam objectives only when
 they have some Linux experience.
I infected almost 30 hobby Linux users with my LPI enthusiasm.
They only asked what LPI is about, and after showing them the
exam objectives and the sample exam questions they were
really keen on doing the LPI preparation and the exam.
We should always stress the freedom of choice with LPI
(exam objectives, literature, training classes), because that
is what LPI is all about)."

 Thanks, Torsten.

Do you know of an outstanding LPI volunteer? Send us your
nominations,
and while we don't promise to recognize everyone in this newsletter,
we
are very interested in thanking our many volunteers from around the
  world for their contributions. (info@lpi.org)

 4. London, Toronto, Boston, Stuttgart

While we are talking about volunteers, we should also mention the
many helpers we have had at various shows around the world this month.
In London at the show in Olympia, Martin Wheeler showed up to help
out. In Toronto I had the pleasure of working with Don 'Thelinuxguy'
Corbett and in Boston Julie worked to ensure LPI was represented -
and in Stuttgart, Torsten worked with Sabine Gold of Linux-Verband of
Germany. Thanks to you all LPI is becoming known around the world.

 5. An alumni report

Our alumni are those candidates who have passed both Level 1 exams and
 are now LPIC-1.
We encourage them to continue to Level 2 and perhaps help us with our
Level 2 beta exams (see item #1 of the LPI-News above).
Around the world we now have over 700 alumni -

Any-one who would like to help us to provide LPIC identification
 cards to our alumni - can send their sponsorship funds to;
 www.paypal.com - and direct funds to wilma@lpi.org
or mail your cheque to; LPI, 78 Leander St. Brampton, On L6S 3M7

 6. Training and Preparation for LPI exams.

When preparing for the LPI exams, it is imperative that a candidate is
fully aware of the objectives -
for Level One they are at; http://www.lpi.org.c-index.html
for Level Two they can be found at;http://www.lpi.org/p-L2-obj-pre.html

 Training ideas can be found on the following webpage;
 http://www.lpi.org/c-preparation.html
Please remember that LPI is training neutral, and we do not recommend,
or endorse any particular type of training - we just encourage you to
train in the best and most comfortable way for you.

If anyone has found any really good resources to help them prepare for
LPI exams, please let us know - we can pass along any worthwhile idea
 for others to use. http://www.lpi.org/i-maillists.html

 7. LPI-Discuss Mailing List

As you are probably aware, LPI has been set-up and is run by the Linux
Community. Without input from the many Linux enthusiasts (both new and
experienced) we could not have put this program together.
To ensure the continuation of this venture, we encourage participation
on the web, by joining our LPI-discuss mailing list, and participating
in the ongoing discussions about LPI and it's plans and goals.
