Subject: [rl-announce] build 36!
Date:	 Tue, 31 Jul 2001 22:59:31 -0700

hi all,

build 36 is out and it's pretty cool. i've put a lot of time into this
one. unforch we lack two things from being code complete, the html
editor and the graphical remote management server. the html editor
probably won't make it into amethyst; i hope that the graphical remote
management server will.

we're still planning on freezing the gui after build 37, so everything
else will proceed according to schedule. here are the changes for build 36:

* added graphical ftp flient [gftp]
* updated Kapital demo
* updated SDL to 1.2.1
* added rl/education subdir to cd
* added tuxtype to educational packages
* upgraded kernel to 2.4.6-ac5, ACPI still broken
* added ext3 support!
* updated kdecoas
* removed plip0 interface
* upgraded samba -> 2.2.1a
* told samba to start automatically
* samba now autoconfigures workgroup from dns domain name
* rlnethood is finished!!!
* logs now rotate at each boot
* added delaycompress to logrotate
* upgraded usb utils -> 0.8
* removed bigfs
* added OS id fields to registry in rllibs rpm
* updated kde, fixed sane [?]
* added konqueror icon to rl/extra/RPMS
* added midnight commander

details:

* added graphical ftp flient [gftp]

lots of people have been asking for a ftp client similar to ws_ftp for
windows. i was indifferent but now that i have it, i use it all the
time! sure beats command-line ftp or mozilla or konq ftp.

* updated Kapital demo

this one crashes less often, but is still missing reports, quicken
import/export, and online banking. theKompany.com is working hard on it
tho.

* updated SDL to 1.2.1

latest and greatest SDL, with sdl-image and sdl-mixer too.

* added rl/education subdir to cd
* added tuxtype to educational packages

a cool penguin typing tutor to kickstart our EducationPak.

* upgraded kernel to 2.4.6-ac5, ACPI still broken

the kernel was upgraded several times but never came out quite
satisfactory.  mod_quickcam doesn't load. 8-(

* added ext3 support!

the default filesystem type is now ext3! this journalling filesystem
means quick recovery times when checking file systems due to errant
system resets, crashes, or power outages. you will see the "checking
filesystems... wait" message much less frequently on boot now.

* updated kdecoas
* removed plip0 interface

we add updated versions of the caldera admin tools [we updated almost
everything to match the final release of caldera 3.1 workstation] and
also removed the annoying plip0 interface that would mess up routing.

* upgraded samba -> 2.2.1a
* told samba to start automatically
* samba now autoconfigures workgroup from dns domain name
* rlnethood is finished!!!

a lot of work has been done to samba to get it ready for the Local Area
Network tool [rlnethood]. samba has been upgraded to the latest stable
version, 2.2.1a, it starts automatically, and now automatically
configures your SMB domain name to match your DNS domain name [if you
install build 36 and call your computer fred.home.com, your windows
workgroup will become home.com automatically].

these three changes allowed us to complete the rlnethood program, which
means you can click on the "Local Area Network" icon to get a list of
computers in your workgroup, then "All Domains" to get a list of all
workgroups/domains on your local network, then a specific domain to get
a list of computers in that domain. clicking on a computer will allow
you to browse all shares on that computer and read and write to them
from the gui if you have permission to do so.

this is just like win9x/nt4's "network neighborhood", although samba
needs a few minutes to sync browse lists after a boot.

* logs now rotate at each boot
* added delaycompress to logrotate

the system logs in /var/log now rotate at each boot, making messages
easier to find after a reboot.

* upgraded usb utils -> 0.8

better usb support

* removed bigfs

removed an annoying message at boot

* added OS id fields to registry in rllibs rpm

now redmond linux knows which product, version, and build it is.

* updated kde, fixed sane [?]

kde updates bring us closer to the magic kde2.2. sane fixes mean that
scanning should now work [untested].

* added konqueror icon to rl/extra/RPMS
* added midnight commander to rl/extra/RPMS

we have had numerous requests for midnight commander and for an icon for
the konqueror web browser. both are included as extras.

thanks!

joe
