New Copyright License Brings Open Source Beyond Software: Design
Science License is a generalized "copyleft" license

San Francisco, CA--Michael Stutz, the author of the forthcoming book,
THE LINUX COOKBOOK (August 2001, 1-886411-48-4, $29.95, No Starch
Press, www.nostarch.com/?lcbk), has developed a copyleft-style
license that brings the enormous benefits of Open Source software to
books and other works.

Until now, copyleft licensing has applied to mostly software, which
requires that the complete source code accompany the software-
permitting unrestricted redistribution and modification, provided
proper credit is given.

Stutz's Design Science License (DSL), two years in the making,
ensures the same kind of freedoms as copyleft licensing for free
software, with one exception: It can be applied to any work
recognized by copyright law, including songs, books, software, and
photographs.

"Any published work should come with the same freedom that Linux and
other free software has," said Stutz. "The future is not in content
protection, copyright control, or intellectual property. The future
is in openness and freedom, and in every individual's right to cut
and paste and copy and modify any work they like, for any reason they
like."

The DSL is used in dozens of applications around the world, including
manuals, music recordings and images. Stutz's new book, THE LINUX
COOKBOOK, is being released electronically under the DSL. Also
available in bookstores or from No Starch Press (1-800-420-7240,
www.nostarch.com), this is the all-in-one guide to using Linux for
accomplishing everyday tasks.
