Dear Editor, Today Mitel Networks announced a partnership with Trend Micro, a leading provider of Internet virus protection, to bring best-of-breed virus protection to Mitel's SME Server V5 with ServiceLink, a preconfigured, Linux-based server and gateway software package designed for small and mid-sized businesses, that converts a PC into an easy-to-use, powerful server that handles all of a company's email and web-hosting needs. Why is this important? AMI Partners, a research firm that specializes in small and midsize business issues, reported that 44 percent of U.S. businesses with fewer than 100 employees don't even have Internet access in their offices, and an additional 37 percent don't operate a Web site. On 8/22, Yankee group's Small and Medium Business Communications Planning Service issued a "daily viewpoint" where SMBs will forge ahead with either increased or consistent spending on communications services over the next 12 months. In fact, thirty-six percent of medium businesses (100 to 499 employees) plan to increase spending. So, while Enterprises are focused on integrating previous IT investments and slashing budgets - SMBs continue business as usual. So - there is a need to provide an easy to install solution to allow small and medium sized businesses to leverage communications solutions and the Internet. BUT.... A study by Computer Economics on August 31st indicated that computer viruses have wreaked an estimated $10.7 billion in clean-up costs and lost productivity worldwide - so far this year. The same research firm indicates that the economic impact of virus attacks totaled $17.1 billion in 2000 and $12.1 billion in 1999. The estimates include the costs associated with cleaning viruses from networks, servers and clients; restoring lost or damaged files; and lost productivity caused by system outages and down time. Through the Mitel/Trend Micro partnership, SME Server V5 customers receive the latest virus updates which are downloaded automatically to a sophisticated server-based virus-scanning engine, ensuring detection and blocking of viruses and malicious code. So, they get everything the need to stay connected and stay protected. Additionally, Compaq recently announced an agreement with Mitel where SME V5 would serve as a strategic offering to the SMB market. I have included the announcement below for your review. I will be in contact with you shortly to follow up. In the meantime, if you have any questions or wish to schedule a briefing, please let me know. As a result of this alliance, businesses that deploy the Mitel Networks solution will be able to receive continuous server-based virus protection to detect and eliminate viruses and malicious code that would otherwise threaten their computer systems. "Our partnership with Trend Micro, a world leader in Internet gateway security, demonstrates the benefits of our approach to delivering integrated network solutions using best-of-breed technology and services from leading providers," said Kim Morrison, General Manager, Network Server Solutions Group, Mitel Networks. "Along with the other security enhancements offered by ServiceLink, Trend Micro's antivirus technology ensures the integrity of our customers mission-critical data." ServiceLink's antivirus service provides real-time scanning of all inbound and outbound email, scanning of files compressed with all major compression technologies, protection from the latest macro and script-based-virus threats, and maintenance of a comprehensive activity log which details each infected file and attempted security violation. Regular updates of the virus pattern file, as well as emergency updates on an "as needed" basis, are downloaded automatically from the Mitel Networks NOC (Network Operations Center) to the customer's on-premise server. Physically deployed at multiple sites, the NOC operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. "Faced with the recent onslaught of viruses and malicious code, small companies are quickly recognizing that managed virus protection, backed by Trend Micro's 24X7 service and support infrastructure, is a viable alternative to traditional antivirus solutions managed in-house by an IT staff," said Mike Conner, president of Trend Micro's North American Operations. "By integrating a Trend Micro-based managed virus protection service into ServiceLink, Mitel Networks joins a growing number of leading xSPs taking core security to the next level." Easy to use and extremely reliable, SME Server V5 with ServiceLink combines award-winning Linux-based server software with advanced network-delivered services to provide unparalleled network security and reliability.
