MONTAVISTA SEMINARS HELP SOFTWARE DEVELORS EVOLVE FROM PROPRIETARY RTOS TO
EMBEDDED LINUX

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--September 24, 2001--MontaVista Software Inc., the company
powering the embedded revolution, is sponsoring a series of half-day
seminars for embedded software developers in seven U.S. locations. The
seminars, entitled ³Moving from a Proprietary RTOS to Embedded Linux,² will
be held in San Diego on October 24; in Dallas on October 30; in Austin,
Texas on November 1; in the Research Triangle Park, N.C. on November 6; in
Melbourne, Fla. on November 8; in Boston on November 13; and in Washington
D.C. on November 15. All seminar times are from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

A recent survey by software market research firm, Evans Data Corporation,
predicts that embedded Linux may soon become the most popular operating
system for embedded development‹ perhaps as early as next year. One of the
most striking results of the survey, published in July, is the indication of
a dramatic shift away from ³home grown² operating systems‹which still
account for more than 50 percent of all embedded systems¹ OSes‹to Linux. The
Evans Data report projects that the market share for embedded Linux will
grow more than 140 percent by 2002.

MontaVista¹s ³Moving from a Proprietary RTOS to Embedded Linux² seminars
will discuss trends in the embedded market, review processes in embedded
software development, and take a close look at the technical issues involved
in moving to embedded Linux. There will also be a discussion around open
sources licenses. Demonstrations of embedded systems that have already been
developed by MontaVista and its partners using MontaVista¹s award-winning
Hard Hat Linux® development environment will also be featured. Hard Hat
Linux is currently deployed by more than 200 customers worldwide.

A similar seminar series in summer was well received at packed auditoriums.

³The seminar provided great insight on how to move an embedded application
from a proprietary OS to Linux², said Dan Accettura of STMicroelectronics.
³Before this seminar, I was concerned about Open Source Licenses in embedded
systems. But the seminar clearly explained the impact of Open Source in
plain language, not legal terms.².

"We at Zebra are currently considering a move to the Linux operating system,
to work with open APIs and reduce costs for royalty fees," said Steve King,
senior firmware engineer at Zebra Technologies Corporation. "The MontaVista
seminar I attended offered insight into the technical challenges of such a
move. I greatly appreciated the hands-on demos by the MontaVista Field
Application Engineer during the seminar. It gave me a good opportunity to
check out the MontaVista cross development environment"
