Subject: Dr. Dobb's Tcl-URL! - weekly Tcl news and links (Oct 22)
Date: Mon, 22 Oct 2001 12:25:46 -0500 (CDT)
QOTWs: "If you have to ask the user something - it's worth saving the
answer." Pat Thoyts
"You can write fortran type code in any language." Jeff Mincy
"No point of closing root access if then you're letting
username/passwords fly in the open via FTP or telnet." Acacio Cruz
My woe, last week, concerning the lack of support for
statistical packages was premature: both "R" and "dataplot" are
very complete packages that are freely available and have a Tcl/Tk
interface. The original poster wanted a Tcl-only package though.
See: <http://mini.net/tcl/statistics>
Announcement of a number of packages: - Tcl/Tk 8.4a4 for Mac OSX -
this makes a lot of people happy. Available via CVS

- Compiler for Tcl/Tk, version 2.2, Available at

Is anyone successful porting Tk to the agenda PDA? A lively
discussion regarding the issues

stimulated a WIKI page about the OS's that Tcl runs on
http://mini.net/tcl/2420.html
Revival of DOS 16 applications: has Tcl really been ported to this
environment? Perhaps this site helps out:
http://www.nyx.net/~tpoindex/tcl.html#mstcl
WebSphere may have adopted Tcl as the main scripting language, but
launching programs via "exec" causes difficulties. They culminate
with long command-lines.

The remarkable flexibility of Tcl does not go unnoted, except with
the bosses of this world. Though it is possible to combine Oratcl
and Perl, just for keeping him/her happy, why go not go for the one
or the other? - If anything, the design will be cleaner.

For anyone interested (and there are quite a few people out there!):
http://mini.net/tcl/awk
guides you from AWK to Tcl. File processing never was easier!
Talking of threads? What about the executable ones, especially in
Tcl/Tk? Well, good news: Tcl and Tk will both become threadable,
look for version 8.3.4!

And this week's special item: Tcl about to become a lingua franca,
as many people are realising that they want to be able to use it
not only in the context of C/C++ but also other languages like
Pascal and Fortran? - I, for one, sincerely hope so!
