One of the main new features of VMware Workstation 3.0 is the support of Windows XP. Using Workstation 3.0, a virtual Windows XP PC can be started under Linux or vice versa. Through virtual machines, equivalent to a full PC in a window, VMware enables simultaneous use of several operating systems and their specific applications on a single PC. Instead of acting as an emulator, VMware deploys the real operating system for respective applications, which guarantees a maximum degree of compatibility and stability. VMware Workstation 3.0 reveals an improved, user-friendly graphical interface. Windows XP users will be especially enthusiastic about the appealing look-and-feel. Major technical enhancements include the support of USB and SCSI devices within the guest systems. CD-ROM and DVD drives are also addressed by the guest operating system. As an additional innovation, VMware Workstation 3.0 offers the possibility of connecting virtual CD- ROM drives to ISO image files. Furthermore, users can now set up IDE virtual disks up to 128 GB and SCSI virtual disks up to 256 GB, enabling the use of larger virtual guest systems. A build-in network address translation (NAT) facilitates the Internet and network connection of the VMware client system. Finally, version 3.0 boasts improved performance, resulting from a revision of the CPU utilization and accelerated hard disk access. The Best of Both Worlds Since its introduction to the market in May 1999, VMware has reinforced its position as an effective and rapid solution for the parallel deployment of several operating systems on a single host. Today, VMware counts over 750,000 registered users in more than 100 countries. Software developers, quality assurance engineers, or sales and marketing professionals boost the performance of their computers with VMware Workstation. VMware Workstation facilitates the development of applications for Windows and Linux on a single host and simplifies debugging for various Windows platforms. Joint use of different test-environments for software testing increases the performance of quality assurance teams. Using VMware Workstation, Web designers work more efficiently, testing new web applications and web pages on various browsers and operating system combinations much faster. VMware also helps sales and marketing teams to cut expenses for the production, maintenance, and distribution of software demonstrations. For Linux users, VMware opens the door to applications not yet available for Linux. Shared file access and "cut-and-paste" functionality seamlessly integrate Windows applications on the Linux desktop. Users enjoy the stability, speed, and superior network qualities of Linux, while using accustomed applications for daily office chores. SuSE offers VMware Workstation 3.0 edition for Linux or Windows NT/2000/XP (single user) with manual at a price of EUR 372.73 + VAT. Licensing by e-mail costs EUR 336.94 + VAT per license. Research and educational institutions are granted special conditions on request.
