SLC/LWS 2001 Social Night
I had expected the Social Night to be more like a reception, but instead it was a four course, sit-down meal. Speakers were fortunately invited gratis, but the tickets for non-speakers were a bit on the expensive side. As a result, only between 30 to 40 participants joined in, including many LUGS members and IDG World Expo staff. It was an enjoyable experience! There were a few comments about the belly dancer not being quite politically correct. I could not join in on that side, however, since belly dancing is quite popular in "politically-correct" Boulder, Colorado and many of my personal friends have taken the classes as a form of exercise. Best of all, though, was the conversation and the ability to meet and interact with so many people from so many areas of the globe. The table at which I happen to be seated included several people from eXtropia, a Singapore-based business with an international staff, including Gunther Birznieks, Stas Bekman, Lim Li Hsien and others. From Australia, we had Richard Sharpe, of the Samba and ethereal teams. From Russia, we had kernel hacker Andrey Savochkin. In fact, I was the only person from the United States seated at the table, quite an enjoyable contrast to other Linux conferences I have attended. Pictures
