LPI in Italy; http://trieste.linux.it/eventi/linuxday-2001/documenti/ Ernesto Ferrari volunteered his time to talk about LPI at a Linux event in Trieste, Italy. I interviewed him on what happened during his day. "There were 200 persons, 150 circa have been listening to my talk. All the talks were recorded on video and streamed on-line in real time multicast, obviously through Linux-based technology. There were two different ''paths'', one informative and the other technical. Slides from both the paths and their talks are now on-line at http://trieste.linux.it/eventi/linuxday-2001/documenti/ > who was it geared to (new interested people or > those with lots of experience)? The two paths were geared to newbies and already skilled technicians. My talk has been followed by exponents of the two worlds: most of them were new intersted people, in particular operators of the training market intersted in Linux. I've already been contacted by a no-profit company that offer professional courses payed with national founds; They'd like to offer Linux training but wanted an International recognized Certification Program to give strenght to their students, and so came at Linux Day in Trieste to listen to what LPI was and what was going on. At the same time there were quite a good number of technicians, professionists, who wanted to know more about a way to see recognized their skills on Linux, and newbies intersted in a learning path. > what other companies were there ? There were also SuSE Italia, Yacme, an Italian company offering Linux services and Prosa (http://www.prosa.it/), which is an historical Italian Linux company: They had been the first to offer Linux services in Italy and are very good in embedded Linux systems, always working with and for free software. > any other interesting items to mention ? The talks streamed in real-time were quite impressive: The guys at Trieste LUG were very skilled and very good in organizing everything. I've received a very positive feedback on LPI from people, and as I wrote before the first important requests for an LPI-Italy "agency" have already come to my inbox. Thanks Ernesto ! 6. Further Exam Translations. This message was received from Greg Wright, who is the chair of the International Mailinglist. He has already officially set up LPI-Australia, and is interested in hearing from the Linux community regarding translations; greg@ausit.com Here is his message; "LPI has been working on possible solutions and methods which could lower cost for interested groups to take part in exam translations. As many of you know LPI takes great care of it's IP so that the program value is not lowered. This is a delicate process which requires oversight by LPI, and LPI is calling for interested groups and business leaders in all regions to put forward indications of interest as we have now found ways that should allow us to bypass what has to date been a prohibitive cost in many regions, to a level that should pose little objection. As always LPI is driven by leaders in the community and the leading businesses in this space. This message is written to all of our volunteers, sponsors and businesses that have an interest in Linux. LPI is willing to work with groups which should include as many interested Linux businesses (or relative business) to enable them to drive this initiative further. Discussions can be held by invitation to a mail list or by contacting our Offices, the International Co-ordinator is also available to answer e-mails or attend calls if required. Linux World - New York. http://www.linuxworldexpo.com/ LPI will be at LW - New York on January 30th, 31st and Feb 1st. Thanks to IDG for their help to be at the show; http://www.linuxworldexpo.com/ Please stop in at the LPI booth to say hello, and if you would like to help out at the booth, just let me know. Write to me at; wilma@lpi.org We will have an advisory council meeting in New York. The advisory council is made up of Linux Community participants who help LPI with their plans, and suggest how LPI should go forward, and are generally our main supporters. At this time of the year especially, we would like to thank our advisory council under the leadership of James Stanger of Prosoft Training http://www.prosofttraining.com/ who is currently the chairman of the advisory council. Without the advisory council we would not be able to function effectively. http://www.lpi.org/a-advisory.html With the help of IBM, we plan to offer LPI certification exam 101 at the show, at a fraction of the cost. Keep an eye on our website for more details on this plan; http://www.lpi.org 8. Sponsor in the spotlight. IBM This month we are giving the sponsor in the spotlight honour to IBM for all their help. With the assistance of Duffy Frone, and all our friends at IBM - we hope to offer testing at the Linux World show. IBM has been supportive from the very beginning of LPI's journey, (they were one of LPI Inc's first platinum sponsors) and we thank them sincerely. http://www.ibm.com/ 9. Logo and name registration. LPI Inc. is pleased to let you know the Linux Professional Institute name and logo have now been legally registered in Japan - these legal processes are lengthy, so it is a pleasure to see this finally come to a successful conclusion. 10.
