Catching Spiders with Bottrap (Linux Journal). Linux Journal has published an article by Andrew Moore about cutting off web site accesses from unruly web crawlers. "The author introduces Bottrap, a mod_perl module designed to cut off crawlers and bots."

European Commission surveys open-source developers. The Institute of Infonomics, University of Maastricht and Berlecon Research, Berlin are conducting a survey of open-source developers. "The survey intends to get developers' own opinions on a range of issues related to Free Software / Open Source. The online questionnaire is specifically intended to provide a mirror to the Free Software / Open Source community. The survey results will be updated and publicly available in real time even during the data collection period." (Thanks to Gregorio Robles.)

Booting Red Hat and XP with Grub. Linux Orbit has published a HOWTO that describes the process of setting the grub boot loader up to work with Red Hat 7.2 and Windows XP.

58-node Linux Cluster 1300 benchmark results. IBM has published a white paper (PDF) that presents the results of tests performed on a 58 node Cluster 1300 system running Red Hat Linux. "This solution mounted in only three racks supported 800,000 users, serving an unprecedented 12,547 requests/sec with an average response time of 0.27 sec/request."

802.1x open source authentication HOWTO. Adam Sulmicki has published a HOWTO on EAP/TLS authentication between FreeRADIUS and XSupplicant that should be helpful to people working with Red Hat Linux and wireless networking.

Events

GUADEC registration online. Registration for the Third Edition GNOME Users And Developer European Conference (GUADEC) can be performed online. The conference will be held April 4-6, 2002 in Seville, Spain.

Samba eXPerience 2002. The Samba eXPerience 2002 will be held in Göttingen, Germany on April 29-30, 2002.

Open Source at South by SouthWest 2002. A number of open source advocates will be present at this year's South by SouthWest festival in Austin, TX on March 8-12, 2002. Lawrence Lessig, Brian Behlendorf, Larry Ewing, Don Marti, Michael Hammel, and Doc Searls will be holding panels on Open Source in the New Media world. (Thanks to Michael Hammel.)

European Tcl/Tk User Meeting CFP. The European Tcl/Tk User Meeting has issued a Call for Participation. The conference will be held in Munich, Germany on June 27 and 28, 2002.

Linux NetMag Issue #5. Issue #5 of Linux NetMag has been published and includes an assortment of interesting articles on Linux.

Linux StepByStep monthly update. Linux StepByStep tells us what happened to linux.nf (its content is now at linux-sxs.org). The launch of a new job board and other topics are also discussed in the newsletter.

Everything Unix. A new portal site called Everything Unix has been launched. "Bringing together the classic 'Everything sites' with just a little extra -- into a one-stop portal for the Unix community... Not so much a news site, but more of a unique content repository and basically a bit of everything... Everything Unix."
