From: Zaheda Bhorat <Zaheda.Bhorat@Sun.com> To: discuss@openoffice.org, announce@openoffice.org Subject: [announce] 641d Build available and your vote Date: Fri, 29 Mar 2002 18:46:01 -0800 All, Release 641d is the final release prior to OpenOffice.org 1.0. It needs your attention. Not only do we want you to use it, but we also want you to vote on the feature set. *First, we would like for people to download it, use it vigorously and aggressively, and then file as many bugs and issues as you can. So, please, use it, test it, and then tell us what you find. Remember, no software is totally tbug free, and we won't be able to fix all the filed bugs. So what we are really interested in are the showstoppers: -crashes - does not run on your distribution -any thing else that seriously prevents you from using the product. Send us your feedback, preferably via IssueZilla, on the bugs you encounter. To learn about IssueZilla, our bug reporter, please read: Project Introduction: http://www.openoffice.org/about_us/introduction.html About IssueZilla: http://www.openoffice.org/projec_issues.html And participating in IssueZilla: http://www.openoffice.org/editorial/ec10Dec.html (Note: We still need more QA volunteers. Please send a note to *Second, the voting. 641d is very close to OpenOffice.org 1.0. The essential features of 1.0 are there. But, it currently lacks KDE/GNOME integration and a few other elements. Nevertheless, it is fairly complete and is a big first step. Future releases will no doubt include more community contributions. That's up to you. What is this vote for? We need to know if the OpenOffice.org community approves of the feature set present in 641d, understanding that with a few additions (such as KDE/GNOME integration), these features will become those of OpenOffice.org 1.0. Remember, future releases of 1.0 (OpenOffice.org 1.0.1, say) may include more things you want. OpenOffice.org 1.0 is a start. This vote is a referendum. **What you are voting on: Is 641d's feature set good for OpenOffice.org 1.0? If most people vote Yes, the essential feature set of 641d will be that of OpenOffice.org 1.0. If most people vote No, we will work now toward creating a community system (a release council) for including community-proposed features. Such a council will necessarily exist for all post-1.0 releases, anyway. But in the interest of expediting the release of OpenOffice.org 1.0, we have stood 641d for a vote now. We will be evaluating votes much as we did for the OpenOffice.org 1.0 name: by evaluating messages and votes. This is easier than it sounds, as the subject line allows for quick review in the publicly accessible archives. To expedite matters, we would like it if the vote were a simple +1 or -1. +1 means yes, -1 means no. Please vote by end of day 2002-04-07. With a goal to count the results by end of day Monday 2002-04-08. Please send your votes to the discuss list: discuss@openoffice.org. Louis Suarez-Potts, and Zaheda Bhorat.
