Geared toward educating the public about the LINUX Operating System and other Open Source software alternatives, "Linux Fest 2002" is being held from 10:00am until 4:00pm, on Saturday April 20th at Bellingham Technical College. The event is free and open to the public. There will be free software, numerous raffles and items for sale, speakers and demonstrations, and tutorials. Vendor displays will include Peak Services, Planetary Data Systems, Jade Microsystems, Northwest Computer Supplies, 3D Computers, Puget Sound Technology, Bargain Bookland, and Lycoris (formerly Redmond LINUX). In a marketplace dominated by high priced proprietary source code software products, LINUX and other Open Source applications have been gaining ground. LINUX has long been popular as an operating system for Internet and Web servers. A variety of LINUX distributions and other Open Source applications now offer a sophisticated desktop, bringing viability to those seeking cost effective alternatives to the status quo. Open Source means the source code, or language the system was written in, is free to be modified and improved by individuals or groups. Thousands of developers from all over the world have worked together to create surprisingly high-quality operating systems and applications, as well as new methods of developing them in a collaborative and cooperative environment. Open Source products allow you to avoid the licensing costs and hassles associated with the proprietary source model. LINUX is available for free download over the Internet. You can also purchase retail packaged distributions from a number of vendors locally and online. Bring your questions to the festival and ask our friendly and knowledgeable volunteers to explain the benefits of LINUX and the Open Source software model. There will be two keynote speakers at the Linux Fest: At 1:00 pm we have Illiad, the author of the popular comic strip User Friendly. See his work at www.userfriendly.org. At 2:00 pm Joseph Cheek, the CTO of Lycoris will speak. The Lycoris distribution makes the desktop appear familiar to users of Windows systems. Find out more about Lycoris at www.lycoris.com. Linux Fest 2002 demonstrations and tutorials include: * Back by popular demand: 45 minute hands-on tutorials where participants will get a chance to use Linux and open source office applications (word processor, spreadsheet, graphics program, etc.). One tutorial will be with the KDE desktop environment, one with Gnome, and one about Java programming. * Linux in the Office: A demonstration network of Linux and Windows computers sharing files and printers. A demonstration of sharing Internet access with several computers and creating a firewall to protect a network from hackers. * Linux at home: The Linux desktop, applications, graphics, games, and running Windows and Linux together. * Linux Games & On line Play demonstration: Stop by to play popular games--playable over the Internet or a Local Area Network. * Wireless networking: there will be a functioning wireless network with Linux workstations. * Low cost Linux: A demonstration of Linux running on a second hand system and a demonstration of Linux as a low cost network router.
