Debian Unveils New User-Maintained FAQ, Seeks Users as Moderators. DEBIAN UNVEILS NEW USER-MAINTAINED FAQ, SEEKS USERS AS MODERATORS. Debian's new user-maintained "Frequently-asked-Questions" at http://www.debian.org/cgi-bin/fom is special in that it is written primarily by Debian users, not developers. This is a place to put the things you find out about your own system, so that other users will profit from your experience. Any user can submit an answer - to learn how, go to the FAQ and click on "About this FAQ", then "How do I add answers?". We need moderators to read user submissions and approve them for inclusion in the FAQ. Each section of the FAQ can have its own moderator, so you can specialize in what interests you. If you'd like to volunteer, please write Igor Grobman <igor@debian.org> . DEBIAN 2.0 IN CODE-FREEZE. Debian 2.0 is now in code-freeze, and large-scale testing is beginning. Most of the developers have already upgraded. If you like to live on the wild side and try not-fully-tested software, an automatic upgrade script can be found in the "Developer's Corner" of our web page. It's going to take at least 3 CDs to distribute the source and binaries of this release. We expect to make several releases in rapid sequence after this one. 2.0 covers LIBC 6 (GNU LIBC 2), 2.1 should incorporate the new package tool, subsequent releases will include ease-of-use improvements and bug-fixes. DEATH OF DSELECT PREDICTED! "Dselect", Debian's package administration front-end, is to be replaced by a tool currently code-named "Deity". Much of the critical functionality of Deity is working now, and an experimental prototype is available to try with Debian 2.0 now, and should be fully useful by the time 2.0 is released. We expect it to be the primary package interface in Debian 2.1 . "Deity" is significantly more powerful than "dselect" or tools in other distributions, and also easier to use and less prone to fail. It currently drives installation of Debian packages, and will eventually be expanded to include RPM packages, POSIX packages, and possibly other standards. The tool is GPL-ed, and we intend for it to eventually become the standard package tool of _all_ Linux distributions. "Dselect" will continue to be supported through several releases.
