We have just released version 1.0 of mayko mxmap.
It can be found at sunsite in the incoming directory
and will eventually be moved to /pub/Linux/science/cartography.
Its home is http://www.mayko.com and ftp://ftp.mayko.com.

It is commercial software, but free (beer) for personal use.

What is mxmap?
- --------------

   1. A way of displaying raster or vector maps under X.
If for no other reason, get it because it looks cool!

   2. It helps you to find out where you are together with
a GPS. Your current position will be marked on the map.

   3. It helps you to find out where something else is.
If the "something else" has a computer with a GPS,
its position can be plotted in real-time on the map.

   4. You can draw routes on a map and upload them to
      your GPS.

   5. You can download routes from your gps and edit them
      in mxmap.

Does mxmap come with maps?
- --------------------------

Some. They are packaged in mxmaps-1.0.tar.gz and can be found
   where mxmap is found.

Also it supports USGS DRGs, BSB/Navtech nautical charts and
your own scanned charts in .xpm or .tiff format.

What platforms ae supported?
- -----------------------------

   Linux i386 (libc5 / glibc)
Unsupported: FreeBSD, Sun Sparc Solaris 2.6, AIX

What else do I need?
- --------------------

Get gpsd if you want to connect a GPS to your computer.
It is under the GPL and can be found where mxmap can be found.

Get gpstrans-0.34 or newer. It enables you to up / download
information to / from your Garmin GPS. It is now also under
the GPL and can be found on Sunsite and ftp.mayko.com.
