From: "David J. Wilson" <vlastyn@NOSPAMgeocities.com> Subject: The Innerworld Project Date: Tue, 22 Sep 1998 13:54:47 GMT -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- THE INNERWORLD PROJECT - ---------------------- Initial Announcement: Mon, Sep 21 1998 This document is just to let everyone know what Innerworld is going to be, what our intentions are, and how we plan to get there. Further details are accessible at the official IWP home page: http://www.geocities.com/~vlastyn/innerworld We are currently developing a number of components which will come together to create a modular, dynamic, and real-time virtual world server. The way it is being designed would allow for a multitude of ways to access it -- thru a Java-based, text-mode, overhead graphical, and/or even a 3D client. The server itself could span many computers, running over TCP/IP, which would even allow for certain modules to be running on systems across the country (speed permitting, of course). Among this, it would even be possible per se for clients developed for _other_ servers to work with this, with the only requirement being a module developed specifically to interface between the two. The server itself, along with the source code, will be freely available and will run on Linux, *BSD, and possibly Windows NT. Once it is obtained, one would be able to modify and/or create an entire world to their own liking/customization, start up the server and host their own private or public world, depending on their preference. And aside from the source code for the server being released, there will also be a developer's guide to anyone wishing to create a client for the game, however we hope to (with assistance) make available free and professional clients for Linux and FreeBSD (under X11) and Windows. These, too, will come in source code and binary form and also be easily customizable for anyone who wishes to have unique graphics and music to a virtual world they create. Upon the initial release, the server and appropriate client code will be made available for open development to anyone who wants to contribute something. Like the philosophy of the virtual world itself, the development is something that will be ongoing and we will be continuously working to stabilize what is currently operational and always trying to expand to new grounds. For now, the development is kept mostly private (with exception of certain aspects) but we urge anyone who feels they could contribute to please e-mail us, as this is an extremely large project and we could definitely use the help. To conclude, we realise that all of this may be a long way off, but the foundation has been set and we're well on our way (even if just with the planning and design) to meeting all of our goals and making this a truly unique experience for anyone who participates.
