To: mozilla-java@mozilla.org From: ojw@iinet.net.au (Oliver White) Subject: Jazilla Report: 18-Sept-98 Date: Fri, 18 Sep 1998 15:38:29 GMT Work on Jazilla - Mozilla in Java - is comming along slowly, but we expect things to pick up signifigantly after recent events. Firstly after a letter to the Java Lobby asking for "just a little plug", we're now front page at http://www.javalobby.com thank you very much Rick Ross. Secondly, the code to "Grendel", the Javagator mail client has been released. A few issues have been raised in our adoption of this code, for one it uses some native code, via JNI (Java Native Interfaces). This has raised several issues pertaining to how we can create a pure java mail client including file locking with UN*X. Feel free to discuss this with us at netscape.public.mozilla.java Grendel is the first source release from the Javagator project codenamed "Xena". We hope that the rest of the source will be released eventualy, but thankyou to our friends at netscape for working around various licencing issues to deliver this code to us. There will certainly be people working on the project, though it may not become part of general mozilla. Also in the news, we have announced a portal competition, to be put up at portal.jazilla.org, so if you want to see your name in lights, get together the best bunch of java/free source related links/book reviews/whatever. Al Sutton is also looking for someone to work with him to create a US mirror of the CVS server, our source distribution machine. He is willing to host whatever source you wish on his UK machine. If this sounds like a good proposition, mail him at al@alsutton.com Me (Oliver White) and Sandeep Hundal are busy working on a new look for our web site, including all sorts of information on Jazilla and Java(TM) itself. ---------- Jazilla Info - Web Site(current): http://www.jazilla.org Web Site(new): http://www.angelfire.com/co/mputerz/ News Group: netscape.public.mozilla.java JavaDocs: http://www.sysabend.org/users/grail/doc/packages.html ---------- -- On the smeeter.
