Subject: [lug] BLUG, October 8th, 1998 Meeting Summary

Attendance: 42 people

Synopsis: Lynn Danielson, the President of the Colorado Linux Users and
Enthusiasts (CLUE) came up from Denver to talk to us about Samba
networking. We setup a small mini-network between his Linux box and an
Windows-98 machine so that he could demonstrate how Samba allows for
file sharing between both environments. With Samba running on the Linux
system he was able to export selected directories on the Linux system so
that they appeared in the network neighborhood on the Windows box.
Similarly, drives marked as shareable on the Windows system could be
mounted on the Linux box as well.

An additional feature of Lynn's demo was that he used the freeware VNC
(Virtual Network Console?) software to help show both sides of the Samba
link on the same terminal. By setting up VNC on both the Linux box and
the Windows box, he was able to open the screen from either computer in a
window on either machine. It was pretty interesting to see the Windows-98
display in a window on the Linux system, or the Linux display manager in a
window on the Windows-98 machine. This could probably have been a demo of
its own. It also meant that showing what was going on at either side of
the link didn't require switching between displays. That was pretty darn
slick!

As usual, the meeting ended with a general question and answer period
before breaking up for one-on-one discussions as desired.
