( BW)(COMPATIBLE-SYSTEMS) Compatible Systems Targets Network Service
Providers With IntraPort Carrier Class VPN Switches

	    BOULDER, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 16, 1998--

New VPN Solutions First in the Market to Provide Layer-3
Access to Frame Relay and MPLS Intranets

Compatible Systems Corporation today unveiled two new
carrier-class VPN switches that allow Network Service Providers (NSPs)
for the first time to deliver VPN-based remote access to Frame Relay
and MPLS intranets.
The new IntraPort Carrier-2 and IntraPort Carrier-8 integrate
dial-up remote access via IPSec VPN connections with Layer-2 services
such as Frame Relay and MPLS, allowing NSPs to incorporate roving
users into packed switched WAN offerings.
"Despite the huge growth of 'roll-your-own' enterprise VPNs,
Layer-2 services such as Frame Relay still own the lion's share of
corporate intranet connectivity," said Matt McConnell, president and
CEO of Compatible Systems.
"Until now, however, there has been no way to bring individual
remote users into the 'cloud.' That's what the IntraPort Carriers
deliver to NSPs. We've put our industry-leading VPN technology to work
to allow customers to do something they've needed for a long time."
"NSPs are finding increased pressure from competition," said Greg
Howard, director of service provider programs at Infonetics Research
Corporation. "They are looking for ways to differentiate their service
offerings and Compatible's IntraPort products will help NSPs deliver
scaleable managed VPN services."
With the IntraPort Carrier series customers would access the
intranet by making a local PPP connection to any Internet Service
Provider. Using IntraPort client software -- available for Windows 95,
98, NT, Macintosh and Linux -- dial-up users create a secure IPSec VPN
tunnel through the public Internet to an IntraPort Carrier located at
an NSP facility.
The IntraPort Carrier terminates the tunnel and establishes a
connection to the private Frame Relay or MPLS service.

	    The IntraPort Carrier

The IntraPort Carrier is available in either a two or eight-slot
chassis. Each slot houses an I/O card supporting up to 5,000 VPN
sessions for fully loaded capacities of 40,000 and 10,000 connections,
respectively. Each StrongARM(TM)-based I/0 card features a Triple DES
encryption co-processor. LAN/WAN interface options include 10/100 Mbps
Ethernet, DS3 and High-Speed Synchronous Interface (HSSI).
In standard operation, IPSec packets from a remote client
location travel the public Internet and undergo a normal VPN sequence
-- decryption, authentication, source address translation -- at the
IntraPort Carrier. VPN groups are assigned at the IntraPort Carrier
location.
The IntraPort Carrier supports RADIUS authentication and
accounting. Once the VPN connection has been terminated, packets are
switched onto the private intranet. The process is reversed for
sending traffic back to the client over the public Internet.
The IntraPort Carrier supports all the features of the IntraPort
family of VPN Access Servers (see below).
