Hayes" <sdc@choice.net> To: lwn@lwn.net Subject: Clarifing My Message to the GNOME list My message to the Gnome list was by no means an attempt to toss away all of the work that Gnome has accomplished, but rather to encourage a merger between the projects by taking the one that is currently stable and integrating the ideas behind Gnome into it. So far, because of the work of developers out there, KDE WILL have themes, tight clean CORBA integration of components (which has existed for some time, examine KOffice for example), and it will be more compatible with other window managers (by working to unify the set of WM hints used by both projects). Other problems that have been complained about, such as programing language for example, ARE being worked on by continuing development in QtC. Keep your eyes open for these features after the release of KDE 1.1 and Qt 2. The REAL block in the path of KDE was the Qt license, that problem has been resolved and now KDE will definitely play an integral role in the development of linux in the future. As I have stated above it is clear to see the line between the benefits of one over the other are blurring and becoming nonexistent. I feel it is important to stress these issues to deal with alot of the hate mail I have received (which is generally from Gnome "users" who don't fully understand the intent of my letter) I am not an advocate of evil; I am a Linux user and developer who wants to see the quickest path to facing the true enemy, Microsoft. :) So let's stop these internal struggles and work to bring Gnome and KDE together, there are plenty of things about both projects that NEED to be shared not fought over.
