Ports

The ports section will be going away in future editions of the Linux Weekly News. Filling this section has been hard at times, and most of the port related news fits just as well in the kernel, development, distributions, or commerce sections. We will not stop covering non-Intel Linux; the news will just be found in other sections.

Sparc

Ade Rixon has published a lengthy document describing his experience with, and evaluation of S/Linux. This document (also available in PostScript), is clearly the result of a lot of work. The overall evaluation seems to be that Linux for the Sparc is not quite yet ready.

Alpha

Applixware for the Alpha has been announced. See their press release for more. One can order it ($99) from their store page; it starts shipping on December 14.

PowerPC

Yellow Dog Linux is a new commercial distribution for the PowerPC. It's based on Red Hat 5.x, but includes other things like BootX and KDE. See their web site for more.
