From: "Atul Chitnis" <AChitnis@CBConsulting.com> To: <lwn@lwn.net> Subject: PC Quest Linux Initiative 1999 PC Quest, a leading computer magazine based in India, is releasing its annual Linux issue for the fourth year in a row in March 1999. As always, this issue includes a complete distribution of Linux on the cover CD. This year's distribution is RedHat Linux 5.2, along with all updates released upto early February. It also includes the latest version of KDE (as of the first week of February), plus a comprehensive post-installation script that applies all patches and updates, installs KDE, sets up your DNS, installs various useful programs, and much more. Kernel 2.2 is also included. What's different from last year's (May 98) distribution is the focus - this year, PC Quest has targeted the corporate world, and the accompanying articles in the issue address corporate management, including corporate FAQs, feature/price/performance comparisons, etc., apart from bunches of "JumpStart" articles that let the reader quickly set up various Linux operations (dial-in, dial-out, backup, SAMBA (Windows networking), Kernel updating, setting up databases, using Linux documentation, etc. Last year's PCQ Linux Initiative resulted in thousands of successful installations not only all across India but across the world, as people used the articles (available on PC Quest's web site at http://www.pcquest.com/may98) to install and configure Linux. Linux plays an important role in India, where available hardware is not always state-of-the-art, and typical life-spans of computers are much longer than elsewhere in the world. Additionally, India has always been known as "Unix County" because of the high percentage of Unix users and developers, to whom Linux is a welcome alternative to other Unix flavours. PC Quest (http://www.pcquest.com), with a print run of almost 70,000 issues a month, and an estimated readership of 3:1, has pushed almost a quarter of a million Linux CDs for free into the Indian market since 1996. The "PC Quest Linux Initiative" does not end with the annual Linux issue, but is a year-round effort, with every issue carrying Linux-related articles (which can be seen at http://www.pcquest.com/linux), along with Linux software on the monthly CD. PC Quest also maintains an e-mail based Linux help-line for its readers. In the past year, this help-line has answered thousands of queries, using internal resources as well as those provided by India's Linux User Group (linux-india, http://www.linux-india.org) which hosts a very active support mailing list. The contents of the print issue will be available on the web at http://pcquest.com/mar99 within a week of the appearance of the issue on the stands (9W99).
