From: Joseph Bacanskas <joeb@mutual.navigant.com> Subject: [ANN]GemStone Non-Commercial for Linux Date: Wed, 10 Mar 1999 07:43:44 -0800 Hi: I don't have a contact for everyone yet, but GemStone has introduced a Non-Commercial version of their flagship Smalltalk client AND server for Linux and, VWNC. They will be giving away CDs at Smalltalk Solutions containing their software, docs and a tutorial as well as ObjectShare's VisualWorks Non-Commercial. They are also going to make it available via ftp. This is a great opportunity to get more people into Smalltalk, VW and OODBMS. The performance limit for GSSNC is that the keyfile for the server will only allow 2 concurrent connections. Still, this is a great thing. I was the beta site for this. It took me, a Linux-Unix newbie, about 1 hour to get the it installed and port my Wave app suite. About 45 minutes of that hour was getting the Linux permissions right! The GemStone port consisted of restoring my repository from a backup. Period. It just works! I logged in from my VW image with NO problem. It works exactly as expected. And in case you had any doubts, it's a hell of a lot faster than NT! ;-) Support will be handled through the VWNC mailing list. Go Smalltalk! -- Thanks!!!
