From: "Donald Malcolm MacQueen" <dmacq@erols.com> Subject: Re: [ALL] Smalltalk Solutions '99 .. someone like to give a report? Date: Mon, 22 Mar 1999 20:44:10 -0500 o Excellent presentation by Jeffries, Hendrikson, & Beck on Xtreme Programming. See http://www.armaties.com o Depressing meeting Sunday night with Kent Beck; the mood was "what do we do now that Java is it?" o Kent reinforced this in his keynote Monday by saying that Smalltalk has lost, that we will never be able to take on Java, and that we should find a niche somewhere, be it in PDAs, Linux, etc. o The JWARS talk was interesting and well presented <g> o Jeff McAffer of OTI gave an excellent talk on what they're doing with distributed Smalltalk o There were three booths in the exhibit recruiting Smalltalkers o VW5i was well received and generated a lot of interest. o There was a SMalltalk Advocacy BoF Wednesday evening with Randy Best, Ed Klimas, Eliot Miranda, Eric Clayberg, and the VisualAge product manager, Peter Spung . Eric disagreed with Kent, so to speak. Ed has some measurements of programmer productivity in various languages that I hope will be posted publicly (STIC?). But the most telling argument for Smalltalk was from Peter Spung who made the point that IBM doesn't put languages on its Big Iron on a whim; they are doing serious business with Smalltalk. I only hope that the relative silence of the Smalltalk users, compared to the Jave banshees, is because they see it as a competitive advantage. o NYC was filled with Irish and the wannabees on Wednesday; there was a bagpipe band warming up in the hotel o The most interesting was a talk by Andrew Brault who has managed to write a VM in about 35k for the Palm Pilot http://www.pocketsmalltalk.com Dennis Smith wrote in message <36f3f084.21106914@client.news.psi.ca>... >For those of us who did not make it this year? > >================================================================= >Dennis Smith, MaSc -- Cherniak Software Development Corporation >400-10 Commerce Valley Dr E, Thornhill ON Canada L3T 7N7 >Phone: 905.771.7011 FAX: 905.771.6288 >quenton@cherniak.on.ca http://www.cherniak.on.ca
