Okay, here we go... :)

COAS is definitely _not_ dead. It's just that I keep neglecting the
list a bit (mea maxima culpa).

Currently, three of us are working on COAS more or less full-time.
COAS will be an integral part of our upcoming release of OpenLinux
(just for the record, it will remain GPLed).

We're in the process of putting together another snapshot. We have
not done so in a while because we were quite busy implementing what
we need for OpenLinux, and because we tried to iron out some compile
problems people have been seeing. (Unfortunately, what appears to
be the biggest stumbling block--i.e. glibc and python 1.5--have not
been resolved yet).

The snapshot will be available within the next day or so. If you're
go to give it a try, it might be best to start with an environment
that's as close as possible to our current platform. This means
building against python 1.4, using the ExtensionClass package
provided on our ftp server, and maybe trying to link against libc5.

Also be aware that quite a few modules will not work on non-Caldera
systems. For some, fixing the portability issues is just a matter
of changing file names in the platform files; for some, such as
kernel module management, new mappers have to be written.

We've been repeatedly thinking about making our CVS repository available
read-only. I've been wary to do so because I don't trust cvs pserver
enough (security-wise)...

In any case, feel free to contact me if you encounter any problems.
