Announce: Secure UNIX Programming Mailing List
        ----------------------------------------------

Motivation and Purpose
----------------------

Currently most security mailing lists, especially those that deal
exclusively with UNIX, are about specific projects, or reporting
vulnerabilities. Even though discussion of secure programming
techniques comes up in the vulnerabilities lists, they are usually
summarized or left out in order to remain within the scope of the
list.

This mailing list is a moderated forum where secure programming
concepts, ideas, and practices can be proposed, questioned, and
examined critically. Although vulnerabilities will obviously be
discussed, reporting them is only a means to an end. The end being a
better, concise understanding of secure programming manifested in a
mailing list, and its archive.

Kernel and application developers are welcome to join the mailing
list and discuss problems encountered, ask questions, and propose
viable security guidelines. The kernel developers can see how
application developers are faring, and what augmentations can better
assist them. Security enthusiasts are also welcome to help get the
word across, and critique ideas. It is hoped that fixes can be
announced faster than vulnerabilities.

Moderation Guidelines
---------------------

The following guidelines will be used to moderate the mailing list:

The message posted to the list must address secure programming
issues for UNIX variants, and must do so with reasonable
technical merit. Reports of vulnerabilities will be approved for
the purpose of analyzing their faults. Messages containing
personal attacks will not be approved, nor will messages that
    are specific to non-UNIX platforms.

Finally, an obligatory note that the mailing list cannot censor or
prevent discussion because of the existence of comp.security.unix as
an unmoderated forum.
