(CA) and Pacific HiTech today announced a partnership to broaden the acceptance of Linux and Linux-based applications by corporate users across the Pacific Rim and worldwide. Under terms of the agreement, CA and Pacific HiTech will create a unique, high-value operating system solution that incorporates both Pacific HiTech's TurboLinux and CA's industry-leading Unicenter TNG management technology. CA will develop versions of Unicenter TNG and Unicenter TNG Framework to support TurboLinux, while Pacific HiTech will promote the use of Unicenter TNG as the premier management solution for its Linux customer base. The companies have also agreed to collaborate closely on engineering multiprocessor clustering and failover support for their respective solutions. "In the world of electronic commerce, high availability provisioning has become more critical than ever," said Rei Jane Huai, CA senior vice president and general manager, Asia. "Together, CA and Pacific HiTech will help bring this level of reliability to customers through a solution that will be extremely suitable for revenue-critical applications and services." CA and Pacific HiTech will also work together to create a testing and certification program for independent hardware/software vendors and other third parties to help ensure the enterprise-readiness of Linux-based products. This certification will allow customers to acquire value-added software and/or hardware solutions with full confidence in their operating system integration, manageability and stability. "CA's impeccable reputation as a vendor of mission-critical computing solutions such as Unicenter TNG--combined with Pacific HiTech's peerless Linux expertise--puts us in a unique position to provide the essential elements for providing a viable solution for commercial use," said Cliff Miller, president and chief executive officer of Pacific HiTech. The companies' integrated solution will provide customers with seamless, "out-of the-box" integration for streamlined setup and installation. The Unicenter TNG Framework will provide all monitoring and discovery capabilities necessary to integrate TurboLinux servers and desktops into the overall enterprise management environment. TurboLinux will also provide a high-performance, low-cost platform for running CA's Unicenter TNG enterprise management solution. The companies will jointly promote the exceptional value, performance and reliability of Linux to both corporate users and third-party developers. CA will include a free copy of TurboLinux to companies receiving the Unicenter TNG Framework in targeted markets, and Pacific HiTech will distribute a free version of Unicenter TNG Framework--along with the requisite management APIs--with TurboLinux. Other marketing activities will include joint advertising, seminars, online content and other sales programs. CA and Pacific HiTech have also committed to ongoing technology exchange and joint support programs as required to meet the needs of its mutual clientele. CA and Pacific HiTech each have an extremely strong presence throughout Asia, making this partnership instrumental in further supporting the current rapid proliferation of Linux in Japan, China and other strategic locations. According to International Data Corp. (IDC), there are more than 10 million Linux users worldwide. In 1998, the number of Linux users grew by 212 percent and 17.2 percent of all server hardware licenses sold last year were Linux, according to IDC. "Because distributed computing in Asia is still in a growth phase, the Linux opportunity there is even greater in some ways than it is in other areas of the world," said Makoto Nozaki, Software Group Research Manager of IDC Japan, Ltd. "CA and Pacific HiTech have the resources and relationships to capitalize on this growing opportunity."
