Today, IndyBox Systems (based
in Indianapolis, Indiana) announced they would be lowering the price of
their Intel Pentium II/III based

XL Series to $675, with one of the many Linux distributions
pre-installed and optimized with the latest stable kernel and X server.
Their 4U rack mountable XL version starts at $900, with a wide array of
hardware options all optimized for Linux.
  
IndyBox Systems Chief Executive Charles Martin said "with the recent
price cuts to the Pentium II, III and Xeon processors by Intel, they
are clearly trying to stagger their pricing cuts along individual product
lines . . . given there have been no price reductions in their Celeron
processors since April of 1999.  We are not waiting for their next
anticipated announcement -- we will not keep our customers in limbo
while they try to decide on pricing for their product."
  
Martin added, "we remain focused in providing the lowest cost of
ownership for Linux systems.  No one vendor can bully the market,
whether they feel they have a monopoly or not.  Pricing is a function
of supply and demand, not simply Intel executives ordering a 'price
drop'."
