MkLinux

The MkLinux user community is now completely in charge of development. A new web site is available with a great deal of information. (Apple's MkLinux site is still up, but is no longer regularly updated.) Several projects are underway, and volunteers are needed everywhere.

The move is on to glibc2. Kaoru Fukui has built an MkLinux installer that can be used to install the new LinuxPPC Developer's Release 1, the glibc2-based distribution. This may become part of a new MkLinux release.

MkLinux is getting current. Takashi Oe is currently leading efforts to port the Linux 2.2.x kernel to run on the Mach Kernel. Much work lies ahead.

Intel and PA-Risc port revival. The original MkLinux distribution included ports to Intel x86 and Hewlett-Packard PA-Risc (aka HPPA) systems. These ports have been allowed to languish far too long, and need volunteers to bring them up to par with the PowerPC port.

iMac and Blue G3 booting? David Gatwood has just (June 10) released an experimental Mach Kernel that may allow the newest Macs to boot MkLinux. Stay tuned. --
