From: Paul Gardiner <paul@scriptics.com> Subject: Forthcoming Tcl/Tk 8.2 release Date: 28 Jun 1999 03:51:51 -0700 This announcement is to let everyone know that we have decided to make an 8.2 release of Tcl/Tk in the near future. Tcl 8.1 added many major new features such as internationalization and thread safety. There has been one patch release since then (8.1.1) and we had intended to make a second sometime in July or August. However, some of the things we would like to include are more akin to new functionality than they are to bug fixes. Rather than add functionality in patch releases, we intend that the next release of Tcl/Tk will be called 8.2. 8.2 replaces 8.1.2 and will be the springboard for all our work in the future. In other words, we do not intend to make any more 8.1.x or an 8.0.x releases. The new features in 8.2 will include: -the Trf patch for stacked I/O channels that is needed for extensions to the channel system - such as the SSL extension -the DDE patch that provides the poke command -some new procedures for manipulating strings that offer substantial performance improvements -the Tcl and Tk test harnesses as loadable packages The new features notwithstanding, the main thrust of the release will be bug fixes. We're currently going through the backlog of contributed patches. If you have new bug fixes that you think should be included in 8.2, please submit them to http://www.scriptics.com/support/bugForm.html before Friday, July 23rd. We plan to make a beta of 8.2 available in early July with the final version to follow in August.
