Conference Invitation and Call for Abstracts
                       http://openscience.bnl.gov

Brookhaven National Laboratory will hold a one-day conference,
titled "Open Source/Open Science", on Saturday, Oct 2, 1999, on the
Laboratory campus which is located on Long Island NY. This event
will bring together scientists and developers to exchange ideas
about the use of Open Source software (sometimes known as "free" or
"public domain" software) in science here at BNL as well as in
other university and laboratory institutions. There will be a
session of invited talks, a poster and demonstration area, vendors,
and tours of some of the Laboratory facility.

The talks will focus on small and large scale research projects
which have made use of Open Source software. Some leading Open Source
developers will talk about new software projects that could have a major
impact on software-intensive science. There will also be a presentation
on the Open Source software projects initiated by scientists as they join
the effort of distributing their work over the Internet.

During the conference, the Laboratory will be conducting tours of
various research facilities on site, where Open Source software
is responsible for a large part of the research work.

The conference calls on authors of Open Source-like software projects,
which are related to science in any way, to submit their work to be
presented in a poster/demo session at Berkner. Computing equipment and
wall space will be made available for setting up posters and demonstrate
   their software.

Attendance is limited to 400 attendees so we strongly encourage those
who wish to attend, to register through the conference web site. There
is a $25 registration fee to cover attendee specific costs and to
   limit absenteeism.

Those who wish to attend the conference or submit an abstract of
your work, please visit the conference web site at
